@Lucidus Yup. The poll is missing Ranged. Silly poll.

I do like melee, but range players, especially caster classes with their aoe have a much better advantage with farming. I envy that a little about them.

I gotta go with both, as I prefer both playstyles, but only certain aspects of each.

I LOVE the DoT Magic Classes (Necros, Warlocks, etc). But I also prefer the Melee Classes who use 2H Hammers and 2H Blunt Weapons (AoC Bear Shaman almosts fits perfectly, as do WoW Arms Warriors).

Something about caving in a skull with a massive Club just gets me smiling...

As much as I love my tank classes, I prefer to play ranged instead. Mage/Elementalist are the best!

Melee are so underrated and forgotten about these days. I'd love it if more games put in thought to melee like Vindictus does. if you're max level there you got variety. Short range melees just don't get the amazing cool abilities that casters do.

Cast Meteorite.

Ummm I cut you?

For me often there is not enough feedback to make melee interesting - the sense of impact by your weapon and such. The jarring feeling of range being always the same arbitrary distance no matter the size of your weapon, getting into range means lots of running etc. Some games do melee well, like Guild Wars and Age of Conan, but i prefer magic due to these reasons.

@Dumac

I like LoTRO's melée the best. I have a dwarf guardian, and when he shield bashes something and it goes flying backwards a.o.t. it's hugely satisfying. The sound effects really help there - the clash of weapons on armour and the grunting of physical exertion are fantastic.

I prefer ranged classes, with a pet of some kind to tank/melee/hold aggro, like the warlock/hunter classes in WoW.

I prefer Melee by a mile. Even though i get hit with ever boss AOE. And i get stuck on Inturrupt duty. I have tried to played a ranged class and always go back to Melee.

@Bramen I guess coz you can't be casting magic and swing a sword at the same time.

So it becomes a 'either or' case here.

I prefer spell casters and ranged (archers) on most games. But on Vindictus I just love the speed and fun of melee combat.

Melee, hands down. Give me a big sword and point me towards what needs to be brought down to an Asura's eye level. I like being in the front lines, right in the thick of things.

It's why I find healing to be dull, and why ranged classes haven't really stuck with me too well. Yet Melee dps (and even tanking to a degree)? That has always been my bread and butter.

Magic. I love the eye candy. Even though Dragon Nest turned into a bland gear grind with a VERY small quest hub, the spells were fun and a joy to use. Being a Mystic and throwing around gravity balls and making black holes can't be matched by smacking something with a stick.

I'm afraid I cannot vote in this excellent poll, as the archetypical "favorite character" I represent in every game, as a scout for my interests, and almost always ending up as a solid "main", is always that world's closest I can get to the "spellsword". Ever since playing a shadowknight in EQ, this is my favorite archetype.

In WoW, it was the paladin, and I dropped everything for a Deathknight when they came in.
In RIFT, it was a Riftblade/Reaver
in LOTRO, a warden (hey those shouts are close enough to magic in M.E.)
In EQ2, a shadowknight once again
in Guild wars, my favorite build was the warrior/necromancer
In GW2, my first character will be a guardian.

Just something about breaking the "dumb as a brick" stereotype of melee, and "glass cannon" ideal of the mage simultaneously is very attractive to me.

As much as Rift bored me to tears, I LOVED the Reaver tree. Easily the best implementation of a Shadowknight / Deathknight right there.

I had a Dwarf Reaver / Paladin / Paragon build in the free trial...only got to like...19 or something.
