Dark Age of Camelot turns 10 this week, and if that doesn't make you feel old, well, you're probably not very old (and while we're at it, kindly remove yourself from our lawn). At any rate, Scott Jennings waxes nostalgic about the fantasy RvR title on his personal blog by posting a remembrance from original Mythic producer Matt Firor.
The piece is heavy on the meta details, and a read-through will give you an idea of how drastically the MMO industry has changed over the past decade. Firor talks about Mythic's scramble to meet the crushing demand for more servers and the resulting mad dash for the nearest computer retailer to purchase a dozen desktops that were quickly loaded with Linux and whipped into an ad-hoc server cluster.
There are more interesting details, of course, and you can read them all at Broken Toys.

Happy birthday Dark Age of Camelot.
What makes me really sad when I look back on the MMO industry since the game's release is the loss of true three way PvP. Here's hoping either Guild Wars 2 or The Secret World can live up to their promised three way systems yet I have a deep down feeling that DAoC will never be topped.
Oh... and yes seeing this game turn 10 years old makes me feel old. It reminds me of how long I've been playing MMO's and how much changed (some good and some bad) over the years.

The best PvP I have ever played. No game has come close to those crazy Relic battles.
Their Realm War zones (separate from the PvE zones) were genius, in my opinion. There was great hunting (good drops) out there but you were very vulnerable to enemies. You always had to watch your back.
But when you didn't have the time or attention to play like that you could retreat to safety to hunt in the PvE area for lesser drops.
Fantastic!

Seriously the best PvP experience of all time. I really hope another system like DAOC comes around, but seriously doubt it will. Sad, Happy Birthday DAOC. MID for life!

Could somebody explain what 3-way pvp is? I've never heard that term before.

It's basically three seperate factions fighting for control. In the case of Dark Age of Camelot you had Midgard, Albion, and Hibernia that could fight in Realm vs Realm zones for control of keeps, relics, and other stuff.
Perfect example. If Midgard was dominating in RvR (realm vs realm) than Albion and Hibernia could team up to take down Midgard. However Hibernia could choose to turn on Albion at the end. Very dynamic fights and you never really knew who was an ally or foe (from the other two factions).

Ah, that sounds great. I was thinking they were refering to GW2's WvW combat. Just making sure. That sounds like so much fun. I just wish i could have gotten into DAoC in its prime.

Guild Wars 2's World vs World vs World system is based off the concepts of RvR from DAoC. We shall see. I really hope ArenaNet can live up to that and pull off making three way PvP again.

I don't understand why nobody plays it anymore if it was so awesome. Could anyone shed some light? I wish I was into MMOs when it launched and got into it.

People left mainly because of while the rvr was amazing, everything else started to become quite dated along with the fact that during one exapansion, Mythic added powerful PvE gear that deteriorated, and had to be reground each time to keep up with everyone else that had that gear.

Happy Birthday DAoC!
One of the best games I ever played.
Why no one has recreated it in a more modern MMO is just mind boggling.
Especially with todays MMO attention span - 3 entirely different realms with entirely different races and classes = 3 different MMO's to aid player retention.
