It's no secret that RIFT was one of the more successful MMORPGs launched in 2011. That said, is it making much of a dent in World of Warcraft's genre-dwarfing armor? Trion CEO Lars Buttler thinks so, and he recently told Industry Gamers that RIFT "is the most serious competitor [WoW] ever had."
Thanks to RIFT's success and the recently announced Red Door development and social networking platform, Buttler sees Trion as uniquely positioned to make headway in the post-WoW MMO marketplace despite the specter of Star Wars: The Old Republic looming on the horizon.
"I'm actually extremely excited about what's happening in our space. When we started five years ago, there was only WoW. Now there's RIFT as an absolute serious contender, with the most dynamic gameplay ever. Then there's Star Wars, then there's End of Nations coming. Then there's Defiance coming [...] so we're not afraid at all. We actually look forward to it with great excitement. It makes our point," Buttler says.

RIFT's current marking tact will work great against SWTOR too. But they might have a wee bit of trouble going after GW2.

I think your right. I have a gut feeling SWTOR isn't going to work out, probably in same vein Warhammer didn't work out. So what will likey happen in this event, that both RIFT and WoW will lose droves of subs for a short while as everybody and their dog jumps onto SWTOR...only to find that's not the game they want. And then qucikly bleed back to those respective games. With GW2, that may not be the same.
Though there is one mitigating factor though that maybe in RIFT's favor over that. That is, GW2 is not a subsciption model. So it still free's players up to still play RIFT since GW2 is strickly box sales. But I can't vouch for RIFT that GW2 could become so engaging and immersive tha players would naturally drop RIFT because GW2 has a far superior hold over them,...as WoW did with Everquest.

@Lucidus I think SWTOR is going to completely obliterate RIFT honestly. With only about 1 million subs going for it right now RIFT is gonna take a huge cut this December. Even WoW is gonna lose a large chunk of subs but it won't hurt them as much as it does RIFT.

Agreed. Back when I was still playing WoW, most of the members of our guild were burnt out on the game (though many of them are still playing at this point, biding their time until SWTOR). Many of them dabbled with Rift and many of them liked it, myself included. But honestly, I couldn't bring myself to get too invested with Rift because I knew I'd be throwing all my energy into SWTOR and only SWTOR once it was released. LOTS of people feel this way. Don't get me wrong, Rift did a great job with patches and updates etc;. And the Rifts themselves were fun for a while. I certainly hope Trion continues to do well and their subscribers continue to enjoy themselves. SWTOR all ready has 500,000+ pre-orders. In September, analysts bumped their projection from 1 million copies sold on launch to 3-4 million based on the pre-order numbers alone. I understand Star Wars isn't for everyone, but I think you're fooling yourself if you think this game isn't going to be hugely successful.

Rift is the reason why I won't play SW and haven't played a MMO since RIft launch. I had ton of fun the first month of playing and even purchased 6 months plan. Then the repetitive end-game came and it made me realise that i have been playing the same old same old since EQ1 and that i'm not into that anymore. Dropped 2 weeks after and never went back to any MMO since.
Been single player gaming since then and having a blast. Hope there's something new in the MMO world around the corner, cause clearly the single player gaming has evolved and MMOs are stuck in and old age.

Hmm I did said i had fun while in Rift and never did i asked or cried for single player content in an MMO, ever. I said that i left the MMO world and been trying single player games since then.
Yes, I am still following the MMO world news because it's been my favorite genre for the last 10 years +. Rift is a solid game that made me realize that after 10 years of doing pretty much the same, I just wanted/needed something more off my gaming/MMOs.
The internet haters need to chill and stop calling everyone a troll.

Ah well I see your point. Nah, I don't want casual stuff, I think I just got to the point I want different stuff. It's mainly a personal thing and nothing toward Trion/Rift. Guess it's called MMO burnout :) Which is way i said Rift made me not looking forward SW:TOR.
I loved Rift when I played it, until the end-game where in my head a big: Oh no, not again! popped seeing the Raid/rep/dungeon/badge grind.
I'll be the firs to admit, I only completed some of the first end-game dungeons but i guess i was already set in my mind.
on the Troll comment, I'm only a Trolldad in real life ;)

"Rift just released single player stuff in direct appeal to people like you who cried for it. Good to see trolls who do not know what is going on are still faithfully following Rift Massively articles. "
I can see why you get down-rated on other posts, even when you do make valid points.
Do you lose money every time someone leaves Rifts? You seem to take it very personally.

"Trion added stuff that he is talking about"
What the hell are you even talking about?
He said that singleplayer games have evolved, not that he wanted to play an MMO in singleplayer.
Do you even play anything other than MMOs?

Yeah, apparently they aren't. Hopefully I wasn't the only one who actually laughed out loud at the title. :D

@(Unverified) Just pr-hype that's all, nothing important. Maybe making with the rah-rah to bolster the troops own morale also. It's a ok game, definitely nothing revolutionary by any stretch. I could never really get into it, tried it repeattedly, but it just is lacking something I haven't been able to put my finger on...

the problem isn't that TRIOn is wearing "rose colored glasses" its that the average MMO player is so burned out by the perpetually static game design thay see a hotbar and elves and go "OMG WoW clone. Ugh!"
While RIFT doesn't do anything to revolutioize the genre it does do several things that both WoW and WAR did wrong.
Its not a bad game by any means, but for someone who's already at the "been there done that" point, Rift is not for them. If you've played WoW and gotten bored with that, why would you play another game built with the same basic mechanics just done differently?
