Star Trek Online has always had a variety of currencies for players, each allowing access to different stocks of items. But another form of money is coming into the game, and much like gold-pressed latinum, it's something that has a long history in lore. The rare and valuable dilithium is being introduced as a new form of reward, and the latest entry in the Path to F2P series discusses just how the new form of money will work.
The most important role that the ore will play will be in replacing the existing free ship tokens that had previously come when players achieved a new rank. Earning a new ship will now be a more difficult and involved task, with a discount coupon and a free offering of refined dilithium to make it easier to earn a ship on a rank increase, but it won't be automatic. The entry goes on to state that the current implementation on the test server is not quite right, and it includes more discussion about how much effort is meant to be involved in getting a brand-new ship.

So if you pay it will be automatic, but f2p has a chance only.

I've been testing the F2P. Here is a quick observation: Before F2P goes live, STO is a fully functional quality game you can get for $15 a month. After F2P goes live, $15 a month will not even be CLOSE to enough to have a fully functional quality game. Each piece of gear ranges from 30,000 to 150,000 dilithium and they are capping PAYING players (gold accounts) at 8000 per day. On the live server when you get a new ship you can spend 3-4 hours in exploration missions to get enough badges to gear up. On the F2P test server there are captains and admirals running around with mark 1 gear and tier 2 ships. No one can get their ship properly geared, and this isnt a problem AT ALL on the live server. They are creating serious artificial problems that spending money above and beyond a gold membership will have to solve.

@xilr This. I rolled a character to play on tribble, and learned exactly what the hubbub was all about. Couldn't believe how broken the dilithium system is at the moment. I know its just an "early build" aka "lets see how much we can get away with", but its still just awful.
They need to re-work it so that gold = current live system and silver = pay up sucka.

Well it is no surprise as most f2p and especially freemium are more expensive than p2p.
Freemiums keep subscription option , but for this subscription you get less than in p2p game.
That's why I stopped playing and I'll not play games with this business model again (and I've tried with Lotro and AoC. )

What a stupid idea. The only real incentive for leveling in the first place is to get new ship. Is it too early to predict Doooom?

So this morning i randomly beamed to starfleet acadamy and there was an event that let you trade in items for dilithium. I guess since i'm only lt. comm i don't know the horrors that await me, but it seems like if you only do standard missions and criuse through the story, that won't be enough to upgrade. You'll have to do extra stuff, and not all of it is hard. I but three of my duty officers to work for 30 minutes and they gave me a rare personal shield. There was another one there for a rare pistol but i saw it after i had already put my doffs to work on other stuff. It really seems like you are still doing less grinding that you would in any other game to keep up. I'll have to see what happens when i get my next ship

If it is mainly time what makes the difference between gold and silvers then I can really get into the game even supporting it(moneywise).
