Red 5 Studios CEO Mark Kern has been around the game development block a time or two. With a resume that includes StarCraft, Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, and World of Warcraft, he's no stranger to successful multiplayer titles.
So why is he heading up the development of Firefall, a free-to-play MMO/shooter hybrid that aims to stand genre convention on its head? Well, precisely because it aims to stand genre convention on its head. "If I see another action MMO combat game with exclamation points over quest givers, I'm going to commit seppuku! We're pouring so much money [into] a very stale formula," he recently told PC Gamer.
Previous attempts at blending MMO and shooter gameplay have resulted in what Kern colorfully terms the "circle of suck," but Firefall will break that mold due to its unique mind meld of both genres. "Let's get the shooting right, and selectively add in the MMO elements. Let's take the idea of open world sandbox play and feature hundreds of players instead of four- or eight-player co-op. Let's take towns, crafting, and resources and combine it all together. And that group would be a much more fun game when we started playing it than anything we'd tried before," Kern says.

I can't help but notice that this particular venn diagram doesnt include any room for an MMO shooter that doesnt suck. A third circle would have helped.

I'm more interested in how they are going to deal with aimbots, the bane of online FPS's. Aimbots are rife in games like Global Agenda and APB, hopefully Firefall will have some detection systems in place that will actually be effective.
Even with systems in place, in a F2P model it's far to easy for someone who got banned to just make another account and be back in the game within minutes. How are they going to deal with that?
It's really pretty sad that developers have to put things in place to stop cheaters. Victory through cheating is a very hollow one indeed.

aah always one "I got beat, they must be hacking"
Though in the case of APB, your probably right. as for GA, I don't recall any instance where it felt like someone was using a bot. Which in a game like GA you really can't.
Firefall devs have stated they are building anti-cheat tech in house as well as built into the serverside gamedata. Basically the server does not trust the client data and checks it against the other incoming data. While I can't really say anything about the gameplay (NDA) I can say the guys on their staff are a surprising group of very transparent developers and thier level of community interaction goes beyond what I've seen from any big name developer/publisher.

Oh dear you got me, I must be terrible when certain individuals in GA would shoot me from across the other side of the map whilst they are jet-packing time and time again without missing even once.
No aimbots or hacks in Global Agenda you say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od21hpcFcE4 that new enough for you? Personally I haven't played in months, but it looks to me that it is still happening.
As for Firefall, that's good to know, hopefully it works very well.

All I can say without saying anything is that Firefall wil transcend the circles and begin the dodecahedron revolution of FPS gaming!

all I can say saying everything is that FireFall will be a payToWin game...maybe not at first, but will slowly move into that as they dont get enough revenue thru non game impacting cash shop items...
have fun being oneshotted by wallet warriors, unless you are another wallet warrior yourself. in that case, LOL at you...

If I had a car for everytime someone covering a game or the company making the game or the fans of that game made this claim, I'd have more cars than Jay Leno, Reggie Jackson and the entire Barrett Jackson auto show combined. (latest game being RIFT to claim this)
In general, just shut up about your game and the "genre" and make it already. Let it speak for itself. We'll play it if it's good.

I would suggest you look up the staff members that comprise this company. This isn't some garage band indie studio, we're talking some of the best in the field are behind this project. Also If you ahve doubts, get on thier IRC channel and talk to them, at least one member of staff is on IRC at almost any point in the day/night.

err.. what the hell does this mean? It has nothing to do what I said.
First, stop pretending I said they suck or or scrubs. It wasn't even SUGGESTED, lol.
Next, reread it carefully. I'm not even knocking the game so get out of defensive mode.
Third, what I said is absolutely true. All these claims made by companies, fans (like you?) and writers end up building expectations to games that amount to average when they cannot deliver on what was hyped.. yes.. hyped. To talk about "setting the genre convention" on it's head is hype whether they can pull it off or not.
I'm saying we've been down this road plenty of times before, by small dinky dink companies who can barely push out one title (Darkfall) and huge megacorporation gaming mills (Square Enix).
Just make the bloody game and shut up about the rest.

@real65rcncom I have to say that I agree with real here and was going to say the same thing.Dont get me wrong I am looking forward to the game just getting tired of dvelopers claiming they are working on making the next best thing since sliced bread rather than just doing it and letting the "game" speak for itself.

Throw in my sentiments with real65: "The proof's in the pudding". So, let us try the pudding and see for ourselves.
As for question marks, those never really bothered me and were there for a specific reason. Unless there is some system that compensates, I can see many lost/frustrated players in this game's future while they locate quest givers. (And heck, some would say, Arrows leading to quests bother folks, too.)
