As an X-wing player from way back, I was always tempted to try out JtL - but not enough to subscribe to another game, level up another character, gather all the materials to build my own fighter(s) from scratch...

What would be nice is if they released the code so that folks could run their own servers with this game, but with the combination of SOE and Lucasarts I know that will never happen.

Hoping new MMOs like ArcheAge will allow for some of this stuff again. The genre really has gone backwards in all but grinds IMO (with a few exceptions).

I'm still heart broken by this :(

I'm trying to forget the game exists right now so the loss of it will leave me. Thanks for the massive lemon juice on my wound SWG devs with the atmospheric flight update. Articles like these only make me feel the loss worse. I need to forget and move on.

While Ultima Online was my first mmo this was the first mmo I played that really grabbed me and had me fully invested in it. I had two accounts at one point even. I rage quit when NGE was announced but came back and spent some time with it before Cataclysm dropped and was pleasantly surprised with how much fun I was having.

Its a real shame this game is going to be shut down. The community is definitely one of the best and the game's sandbox appeal is second to none. It definitely had its flaws but it didn't stop me from having a good time. Im glad I will be there to witness the last few months of a one of a kind game.

I came back to play SWG a few months before its shut-down was announced. I decided I wanted to focus on crafting since it is something I never got into when I used to play. So I made a crafter and was enjoying the hell out of managing all my resource gathering machines at their various locations and giving out free drinks at the Mos Eisley cantina to promote my products. When I was close to perhaps making a storefront the announcement happened.

I kind of wanted to stay but I didn't feel like there was much point as a crafter to continue trying to build up a business that was going to be torn down anyway. So in the end I decided not to stick around for the sunset months. RIP SWG, hopefully more games can take tips from you and provide gamers with some fun things to do besides killing things and raiding.

Its sad, all those years I thought this was a mess of a game that had been completely destroyed by Sony's overhaul. And now, too late, I realize how this game must have been so cool.

Knowing that it would not be going down, I would start playing this game this evening...

I feel responsible for its death!

I was brought on to work on SWG after the NGE. Don't forget to try a few other things we added after the NGE:

1) Battlefields
2) City Invasions
3) Beastmastery
4) Gunships (6 turrets plus a pilot...7 player ships...)

Both games are great because they promote ROLEPLAY in an mmoRPG of all things lol. mmo's are MADE for RP and i hope more games follow these two. So many devs opt for power-leveling, raid/pvp games with no story/rp functionality. SWTOR will be, and swg is - epic!

so long swg my old friend...

I weep that there might never be a crafting system like this again. I did the master weaponsmith grind before all the patches of doom and it was a pain in the ass...in the best kind of way. There was nothing in the world like finding that pure patch of minerals, harvesting them, and crafting that one of a kind weapon. No crafting system before or since has been able to remotely touch it.

Now I see why no one is stating the obvious, the mods are removing the posts.

What a disservice Massively is doing to their readers by making them think they will no longer be able to play SWG legally after the SOE servers shut down...

@enamelizer We don't exist to facilitate our readers' breaking the TOS for the games we cover; consequently, discussion of emulators is against our Code of Conduct (just like breaking NDAs and so forth). Google will probably provide what you're looking for. :)

@Brianna Royce

I realize you are just enforcing the code of conduct written by someone who incorrectly assumes emulation to be illegal.

BUT

Someone better tell Justin Olivetti about your Code of Conduct, he wrote an article with an entire section that extolled the virtues of an E&B emulator =O
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/22/the-game-archaeologist-goes-to-earth-and-beyond-final-memories/

And you guys better pull all these articles off your site, Cider/Cedega is a Windows emulator. You think emulating the server of a defunct game is bad, emulating the most popular OS in the world must mean massive jailtime!
http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/cider/

All kidding aside, the license agreement that ships on the physical disks for SWG do not forbid connecting to private servers. I just felt like I was in the Twilight Zone and no one could see the giant elephant in the room.

@enamelizer

Is that thing we cannot discuss fully implemented? Umm, "hypothetically speaking" does it have housing, player cities, etc.? Of course, I would log in just to see the game again - umm, that is, if it were possible..... :P

You could find out if you conjoined the acronym for the game(SWG) with that of a large flightless bird (EMU) and put the resulting word into a well known search engine

SWG had the most potential of any game I have ever played. Unfortunately, that potential was never realized.
