Vindictus and Rusty Hearts? Terrible, terrible approach to a Neverwinter game... way to ruin a perfectly good franchise Perfect World...

@anothermedium

It was always going to be lobby based with instances, the whole player generated content system needed that, not to mention to mention DnD has always been about small adventures in dungeons, not a massive open world.

The only new information in this is the action combat (which better be real not the fake action of CO/DDO). And that they've decided to add the MMO tag.

they said they were re-focusing the genre toward action (not semi turn based). And they are likely getting rid of the custom made content as well. One of the best things about NWN was the fact you could have a realistic (-er) role playing game and custom mods to keep it fresh for years. Its not neverwinter anymore with those two changes. I dont see how an f2p mmo will work with custom content. That's their bread and butter is to sell you content.

@Rahabib why would you conclude they'll get rid of the UGC? They've already incorporated the system they designed for Neverwinter's UGC into Star Trek Online.

@anothermedium Naah...to be an MMO the game needs to be somewhat "massively" (that is to have a somewhat large amount of players online), it needs to have multiplayer and it needs to be online.

Vindictus is not an MMO in my book.
It's an instanced mini-group game with a mirrored hub that can sustain ~50 players at most.
To be an MMO a game requires to have about 80% of open areas and hefty numbers of concurrent players without instances or mirroring...

Guild Wars is pretty much the same way, but it's "MMO-like" enough for Massively to cover.

In fairness, when they reference Vindictus in the article, they're talking specifically about the combat system, not the setup of the world.

Really, it's like no one reads the source article. The ONLY reference the developers made to Vindictus is in regards to the combat system. The speculation about the game being lobby based like Vindictus was just that; speculation on IGN's part.

"The developer says Neverwinter will be closer to a game like Nexon's Vindictus, where combat is controlled by mouse clicks, and where pattern recognition and reflexes are the keys to successfully murdering hordes of monsters. Vindictus is also session-based, with each action foray designed to last about twenty minutes (Rusty Hearts, mentioned above, also follows this pattern). It's entirely possible that Neverwinter will follow this session-based structure as well, though it's worth remembering that both Vindictus and Rusty Hearts were developed for an entirely different market."

@Ehra if they make this an action game they need to name it something else then neverwinter night. Neverwinter should never be action oriented.

That fact alone is reason enough for me to never play that game, ever.

@aaradun

Neverwinter Nights had some of the most boring combat ever. Why people act like the gameplay was what made the game, instead of the player-made content and the ability for players to DM/run their own worlds/content, is beyond me.

Seriously, all a melee class would do is turn on power attack, click on a monster, and watch the random number generator do its thing. Every once and awhile you'd do a knock down, smite evil, or chug a potion. Why would anyone WANT that crap?

@Ehra Yeah I admit my first post was bad and I downvoted it myself. In fact, I read that between the lines but the article does not say that. Still, my comment is "true" although unrelated to the article :)

To be fair, Massively's reporting on this interview is pretty bad. The simple fact is that the only reference the dev made to Vindictus was to the combat, so claiming "An article on IGN today delivers the news that Cryptic and new publisher Perfect World Entertainment are reorienting the game's design to make it a true MMO in the style of Vindictus or Rusty Hearts:" is highly misleading.

Neverwinter very well COULD be session based like those game, but the developers didn't say that.

@pid Ah...you mean like WoW and GW are numerous others....perhaps they are not MMO's as well...?

Can you name ONE MMO that fills all your MMO standards?

Before I tried WoW I hated RPGs with a passion - something I blame on Neverwinter Nights. Niow the studio famed for cookie cutter MMOs and corrupting ST lore is gonna do NW - good luck iwth that ;-)

I love the setting to bits and pieces, and I want to be excited for this, but I really have my doubts.

@Irem especially after the last two MMO's Cryptic have released, and because (un)Perfect World are in charge now.

I'll give it a lash, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Lobby based? Booo. Count me out. I had my hopes up, but I don't consider lobby based games real mmos. They are in the most direct definition, but they don't feel right and that is what matters.
