All this, of course, pales next to games such as Champions Online and City of Heroes, which have even broader options. And sometimes you don't really want to fuss with the fine details of your arm length before playing the game; you just want to get in the game and start punching things. So is it possible to have too many options at character creation? Or is that like asking if you can have too much money?

While Aion may not be your cup of tea, you certainly can't claim that the character creation in the game is lacking in features. It is possible -- easy, even -- to make a tiny, anime-esque sprite or a would-be marble statue, if you wish. Of course, to do that you have to play with several dozen sliders, hair styles, skin tones, eye spacers, and an overall breadth of options that could make some players boggle.

They can have as many features as they want, but with great customization comes great responsibility...
AND THE NEED FOR A "SAVE CURRENT PROPORTIONS" OPTION!

Nope, never too many options. So long as there is some randomize function with different bases to work off of that people can choose who don't want to spend much time, then it's all good.
Aion did allow you to make very misshapen characters though, so having certain body proportions tied to others is probably still a good idea.

I think it depends entirely on the interface. Dragging 100 sliders obviously wouldn't be very good, but if those 100 sliders can be integrated into the UI in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming, it's a good idea to do so. For example, EVE Online's character creator has probably over 100 sliders for shaping the face and body of your character, but these are integrated into the 3D model itself. You push and pull at areas on the face and body to change their shape, so it feels very intuitive without overloading the user with choice.

Yup. I definitely agree with you Brendan.
EVE Online's character creator has the best one I've seen so far. Aion was good but too many sliders.
The one thing I liked about EVE's is that you can literally sculpt your character the way you want to. It's fluid, intuitive and creative. It honestly makes me wish it was implemented in other MMOs.

No. It's all to do with choice, variety and originality. The more the better.

Not for me. I think the Incarna character creation has been my favorite so far so something along those lines would be fine with me.

Why not? The more options the better!
The people who abuse the system (i.e. create hideous characters) are far and few in between the sea of beautiful avatars.
Face it, the majority of people want to lose themselves while playing with their pretty avatars.
"So is it possible to have too many options at character creation?"
So I say no. Even those who don't WANT to mess with the advanced options ALWAYS have the chance to simply choose between Randomize or Template.
Don't deny the rest of us our options.

Nope. Games like WoW, LOTRO and SWTOR with their limited options make me sad.
Hope GW2's is extensive (unlike GW).

I didn't realize SWTOR's character creator was finalized and released 3 months before the game launched:P

Don't be foolish. If their character creator wasn't more or less done then I'd be extremely worried. This is basically what we are getting in release. We might see some more versions of hair or faces, but this late in they aren't going to introduce a different system.

The last beta video I saw had 9 different sliders one of which was hairstyles that had 25 options. This is hardly in the same class as WoW's character generator. If this were the "final" version I'd be pleased. Why would I be foolish to assume, as you are, that this is even the final version?

yes, you can, especially when you get into arm and leg length, because you might not know how it looks animated.

Although I really enjoyed the character customization options in Aion (I like to spend quite some time on my character, I have been disconnected a few times for taking too long ;P), I strongly dislike the ease in which you can make these monstrous, tiny, huge horrible creatures that some dare to call human/daeva.
I like the way GW2 is going with their character creation. Many options, but all fit within the lore of each race.

I actually felt like Aion's character creation system went too far, and worked against the design of the otherwise very beautiful game.
Players could customize so far that they had the option to make ridiculously grotesque characters. For example, tiny little bodies with enormous balloon heads. It hurt immersion.

Exactly. I'm all for customisation where it's going to make interesting and diverse characters but Aion was at best a joke and at worse totally immersion breaking and ruined the appeal of the game for me.
I can't imagine how they thought, after spending so much time on creating a very beautiful and often glamorous world that allowing people to make absurdly disproportioned characters would be a good idea.
I do question sometimes the amount of sliders on characters faces too, when you rarely see the face and even more rarely that close up to see if the cheekbones were 3 mm higher than that other face over there.
Spend the extra effort making some more hair styles, decorations or colour options instead of 100 sliders for 'eyebrow depth' and 'ear angle'.

The thing is, Korean culture places more emphasis on mutual dependency - or, in other words, they had faith in their fellow man to not abuse their given abilities.
And I don't see how Aion was "at best a joke" considering you can easily recreate almost any living human being in the game. That's pretty damn impressive, if you ask me.
But really, again, it's just not possible to give both great customization AND limit it to attractive/not-horrible creations. If you can only make attractive characters it is not good customization, period. Even if you took away some of the absurd body customization in Aion people can still create obscenely ugly characters just by messing with the face sliders - and, hell, even games that are considerably more limited let you do the same: for example, EVE Online, which has some characters that are almost inhuman in their ugliness: http://facecardgame.com/eve/?characterID=336906604
You can bet your arse you're going to see some frighteningly repulsive creations even in Guild Wars 2, I guarantee it.

Just to be clear, I was talking about the absurd extremes of customisation when I said the Aion characters were a joke. They literally make you laugh out loud when you see some of them waddling towards you.
I think it's entirely possible to offer a lot of customisation without going into the realms of physical impossibility, as they did in Aion.
Ugly/beautiful is irrelevant as it's totally subjective, but when the options allow for impossible/nonsensical proportions then that breaks the believability and integrity of the game world.

Yes and No.
You just have to limit making grotesque / ridiculous looking characters.
If you can do that then you cannot have too many options.
Of course doing character creator with alot of options and at same time making grotesque characters impossible is very hard.
Sure it is. Most great things in life are hard to do.
