Thanks for doing this. I have always enjoyed them and am sorry to see this column disappear. :(

Umm.. WHY on earth would you take down One Shots? All you do is copy and paste an image you select from emailed submissions and add their caption. THATS IT!!!!

Everyone loves one shots and there is no reason to get rid of it. Now, if you are replacing it with something similar, where you show 2 submissions a day and a diff name ,then ok.

By getting rid of OS you are hurting this website. OS is the ONLY daily posting that doesnt rely on a staffers bias or opinion. Its just a picture to make people smile and see an aspect of a game they might not play or do play.

DONT GET RID OF ONE SHOTS. If you do, within a few months it will be back anyways.

Or, GIVE US A REASON.

My guess is that they have some sort of server metric which tells them what columns people click through on.

Since One Shots usually...uh...delivers its payload... on the front page there's very little reason to click through. So the column "seems" to be unpopular.

If they gave just a description, and then had the pic after the jump I bet it would stay around.

But, the internet being what it is, everyone would scream how they are getting more clicks by being cheap or whatever...

@Pingles

About a year ago I was talking to the staff member that was handling one shots at the time and she told me that at most they would get one or two screen shots in their mail box at any given time, and many times they didn't even get a single one.

I doubt that the popularity of a column that was already a few years old to begin with would rise much in the time that has passed. This is just a guess but I figure it has less to do with click-through and more to do with overall user participation.

@Pingles

The problem with that theory is since the picture of the day is cleary seen as well as the caption explanation by scrolling by it. Thus the article doesn't need clicking on....unless we choose to comment on it. So it's there for all to plainly see without having to open up the article up.

@whateveryousay

Although your explanation does sound more plausible, it's still a little surprising since Massivley has become more popular over the years. One would assume there are more peeps submitting pictures. Perhaps we've become more prudish. :(

However, I still like to hear from Massivley why they're round filing this column. I and others await patiently for their answer.

We'll see on Monday. I posted my theory yesterday on the final One Shot.

@Utakata There were a lot of reasons, but you guys named a few of them. Lack of submissions was a big one -- it wasn't unheard of to only get three submissions in a week. I'd wind up taking screenshots myself or pressing coworkers, friends, and guild mates into service at the last second. Even after saying "One Shots is coming to an end, if you want to get an image in do it now," only two people stepped up. We tried lots of different things to get people interested, but nothing worked, so we "took the hint", so to speak.

However, we've got the new thing coming tomorrow and I *really* think you're going to like it, I promise!

@Rubi To bad it wasn't stated on the site for example "One Shots: We need your Screens!" I thought it was doing fine.. I had thought about sending in a few myself; however it seems unlikely now.

Maybe you can do a spin off for couples, friends or family "The Moment" gaming screens! :) ...somethin'....

No, I'm not using that name anywhere in City of Heroes (I just have WiFi on Union and Ignis Divina on Virtue at the moment). Mild coincidence, though, since I did help someone with just such a conundrum ingame yesterday.

@Rubi

Heh... well crap!

I has assumed y'all were *flooded* with screenshots all the time and I didn't want to impose upon your already heavy workload by foisting even more screenshots upon you.

I don't recall ever reading anywhere that the number of submissions were so meager that shutting it down was the only option. Had this issue been communicated (you know, like, "Hey, if you folks want this feature to exist, send in your frickin' screenshots, dammit!", perhaps it would have informed your regular viewing audience to step up and help that feature thrive on this site.

Meh. I usually just glossed over One Shots anyways. I learned a long time ago not to judge an MMO from screenshots, so other than showing a few gimmicks, I never really saw the point.

I'd much rather have words and videos filling the spaces of this page over briefly captioned screenshots of the same 5 games over and over again. If I never see another LOTRO or Rift screenshot, it will be too soon.

The three Massively columns that I pay attention to - unless something extra catches my eye - are One Shots, Daily Grind, and Mog Log. Of course I never click into One Shots because the pictures are right there after expanding on iGoogle.

I've submitted a couple times over the past year or two but never got posted up (that I caught, anyway).

Oh well... it will be missed.

So sad to see it go. With games like SWTOR and GW2 coming out, make it all that much sadder. :O(

RIP OneShots.
