"Given how much money is being thrown at Star Wars: The Old Republic, I was genuinely surprised that BioWare had stuck with the WoW gameplay model down to the last detail, even when it didn't work very well or suit the setting."

Considering some of the things the guys at Bioware have said about WoW, I'm not surprised about that at all.

For crying out loud this hack wrote his criticisms of Star Wars after 10 minutes. 10 minutes!!!!! He had already decided he was going to slam the game before he even stepped up to the booth.

not hating on you guys at all for your opinions, but it seems like every site i've read thoroughly enjoys SW:TOR demos aside from Massively. The article on it suggests you already had bias against it before you even started, but then again I guess I'd be disappointed to sit in line for an hour + for just 10 minutes of gameplay.

Funny. You hadn't posted this comment when I read the piece so the fact that both of us noted bias in it says something, I think.

I agree, if you were to google the phrase "SWTOR Impressions 2011," you would find that EVERY other site on the first two pages has something positive to say about the game, or at least moderately constructive towards the direction it's going.

Massively just seems to have it out for this game. Readers don't care whether or not the writer personally liked the experience, they want to hear the pros and cons, and they want to hear them in a way that appeals to both sides of the argument.

@x4str0m3ch So far we've had mostly first impression opinions from staff members because Bioware has only given hands-on time with the game in short bursts at conventions. Now that a full wave of beta invites are out, I'd expect more of the pros-and-cons coverage you're looking for to come out.

Coverage like that tends to require a lot more play time to compile. A ten-minute demo is certainly not long enough to decide whether the game is worth buying or not. I'd love to have had more time on the game before writing my first impressions of it, but developers were only allowing short ten-minute tutorial sessions.

QFT! Massively, seems to be wallowing in the GW2 hype train. This article is extremely biased and underwhelming.

Holy crap you people are ridiculous. It's an opinion piece about the author's personal impressions of the Eurogamer Expo, OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO BE "BIASED." THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE ARTICLE IS FOR THE AUTHOR TO EXPRESS THEIR PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS/OPINIONS OF THE EVENT; OPINIONS ON SUBJECTIVE MATERS LIKE GAMES ARE, BY THEIR VERY DEFINITION, "BIASED."

Here's a nice thought experiment for you people that are screeching about "bias:" If the author had said they loved TOR would you be complaining about their supposed "bias?" No? Then guess what; your complaints about bias are, in of themselves, biased!

I can understand that, and I honestly didn't mean to disrespect anyone personally. I would have been hard pressed to make a decent impression article with only 10 minutes as well, but I was just commenting on the overall theme of the articles posted in the past.

Here's a thought for you. These authors write their opinions/findings on an open forum complete with comments section so that people can respond to it with their own opinions about said article.

Mind = Blown.

When did I say people couldn't post their opinions about the article? Oh, wait, I didn't. What I DID say is that calling the author out on "bias" is ridiculous because it's an opinion piece. Every opinion piece out there (and, just in case you didn't realize, that's exactly what ever game review is) is "biased."

The only reason the people posting these comments are upset is because someone wrote a negative article about a game they're excited for. Which is fine, but they should just say so up front instead of hiding behind a BS complaint like "bias."

A 10 minute demo is worthless, I find it even hard that you can say something about the game and you 'falling into the same rhythm' and how combat and controls are in that short a time, minus even the time that gets you through the char selection and setup. 10 minutes means less than nothing to form a sound opinion about an MMORPG.

And frankly, I'm surprised, BW has had whole days and weekends where all renowned game and MMO sites were present to play SWTOR from 7 to 14-15 hours. Where were you people then, been sleeping? Don't tell me no one of your people were invited for those, they were I think in March and in December.

If you'd have been there or done some more investigating, you wouldn't have sounded like some newb who knows nothing about SWTOR and gets his 1st try at the Star Wars game, because that's how you sounded now.

As a journalist, I'd be ashamed to even report about how my 10 minutes of gameplay were, knowing how futile and ridiculous it would sound if it was about an MMORPG.

@(Unverified) As part of the Joystiq network, Massively employees abide by the Joystiq integrity policy, forbidding us from accepting gifts above $20. This includes paid trips to events; even if every other site in the industry is getting flown out and put up in hotels for free we can't (and shouldn't) accept it. This sometimes means we can't afford to attend an event. If everyone else in the industry got full days of hands-on and we didn't, there's a damn good reason we didn't. In this case, I paid my own way to Eurogamer Expo as I live in the UK and it didn't cost too much to attend.

In addition, I see nothing wrong with giving impressions of the ten minute demo that was provided to expo attendees. Guild Wars 2 had three times as many PCs set up, so I was able to lodge around two hours of combined gameplay time over the weekend. In contrast, Star Wars had a single booth. This article is about my impressions of the game demos at Eurogamer Expo and how they've influenced my perception of the games, and to take it as anything else is absurd. In fact, it would be pretty much impossible to give full impressions or a review of an MMO.as they're designed to have months of content. This is the primary reason that Massively doesn't do reviews.

And every single one of those sites that said they loved SWTOR, also gave Dragon Age 2 really high scores and sung praises over it, and look how that turned out~!!!!

Definition of impression: An idea, feeling, or opinion about something or someone, esp. one formed without conscious thought or on the basis of little evidence

Definition of review: A formal assessment or examination of something

This is an impression, not review. So the author has the right to write about HIS opinion.

Please go to other game site and read their positive "10 minute in-depth reivew" if that is what you wish to hear, and stop trolling here.

Come on... 10 minutes? Really? You can honestly say that's enough to make any kind of statement about a game you've been playing? Wow...

For the record, I looked it up, there HAVE been people of Massively that played SWTOR for a more extensive period of time, that even were around at those special events where you played SWTOR for hours at a stretch.

You're just arriving late on the stage, writing your impressions on a fraction of the time they had, which feels kind of odd, What can someone tell about 10 minutes gameplay anyway, of any game, let alone an MMORPG? One that you apparently weren't that knowledgeable about as well, which is odd as well for an MMO game journalist.

Actually, Bioware are the ones saying 10 minutes is enough time for a game to make a statement to the person playing it seeing as how they chose that time frame. If it's not then it was REALLY silly of them to limit the demoers to such a short amount of time, wasn't it?

dude, chill. I was commenting on the fact that basically every single massively article on the topic of "hands on TOR experience" is negatively biased. I didn't say it couldn't be biased, or that an opinion piece shouldn't be biased.

No, I'm just saying it would be nice to hear some positive things about the production, as opposed to someone basically writing "Well, it wasn't really doing the trick for me."

Has nothing to do with this author specifically, or any author specifically. Or any article individually. I'm saying that, on the whole, massively has been reviewing the game negatively, and that I would like to see them write something positive. so chill out man, i'm not trying to troll you or anything.

ps. mis-replied this on other page. oooooops.

You're probably misinformed, but regardless, I didn't hate DA2. Played through twice and sold it back, but it wasn't total garbage for me.
