Happy Birthday! I personally prefer plasma, but thats just because I like the added DoT effect, even if its not significant... but even at 2.5% (1 in 40), none of these effects is ever significant... even with 5 beams firing simultaneously, it only makes it a 1 in 8 chance of the effect happening, so it might happen once or possibly twice per battle.

The only weapons that might make a noticeable boost are Antiproton, but speccing into them comes at a premium. With the effect usually not making a big deal on other weapons, I think weapon choice solely comes down to preference. I like DoT, and I like green, so I use plasma.

First let me say Happy Birthday Brandon!

Personally I never really saw much of a difference in investing so many points on endgame energy types. I rather spend those points on something that helped me on my engineering talents like increased weapons.. I stuck with phasers on my fed tact and disruptors on my kdf and they can do easily over a million in a good day and 900k+ on average in pvp.

If you ask me all the other weapon types beyond the first tier (phasers/disruptors) are just fluff. It's good that in the relaunch to f2p they'll be taking out the tier types because in reality the increases in dps was incredibly marginal.

I'm a traditionalist, going for phasers and disruptors, even though the proc effect of the former is rather lackluster.

I took a break from STO from a while, and at the time everyone said use phasers. Since I came back I have been seeing various other weapon types used. I'm still debating on what I want to use, I've been trying to keep track of what I see in the Borg encounters. Tetryon seems very popular.

Antiproton seems popular also, but the beam versions can be a bit harder to pick out in the middle of a battle (since they look similar to phasers)

@Interitus
They changed the graphics for the weapons to better distinguish them now. The antiprotons have this spiraling energy around the beam and it's a more orange color now.

I always went for phasers on my engy simply because I found myself starved for skill points in my build and couldn't justify spending more on the "exotic" energy types. I also feel more "star trekky" firing phasers as a federation player, lol.

The phaser proc isn't bad either. With my beam heavy cruisers I see the proc a lot more than I would expect.

In my Cruiser, since I don't have cannons to burn quickly through hulls I have to rely on getting my torpedoes to the enemy's hull. To do so I use Tetryon beams, which burn through shields very quickly and keep the enemy shields down.

I used to use phasers, which drop enemy subsystems at a surprising rate when 4 beams are hitting them ( 4 x 2.5% = 10% chance per round ), but a cruiser is very weak unless you can keep the enemy shields down and though the phasers will make enemy shields drop occasionally it's usually not at an appropriate time for me to fire my torpedoes so the opportunity is missed. With tetryons I burn down shields very quickly and keep them down.

The trade-off of course is having to spend more points on beams and so spending less on something else in the captain's build.

Happy B-day, and good article. It should be helpful to those trying the game for the first time when it goes F2P =)

APs were the first ones I ran, like the author, because of color. Lets just say the color matches my ship name. I am running a cruiser though, and I soon realized that with a large enough group the best weapons were phasers. A group of 5 players all running phasers gives a really nice chance to proc a shield take down, and completely disable the enemy. Thus, I switched to phasers on my cruiser.

My escorts I am running Tetryon + plasma torps. I have found against a single target there is nothing easier than tearing down their shields and blasting them at close range with a HY plasma torp. However, I don't play my escort much and if I ever get around to it will respec to either Phasers or APs.

I run disruptors on my Klingon ships, mainly because their Star Trek canon for KDF. I still prefer the phasers though.

Polarons... I have found pointless they are a more powerful, or well rounded, version of the phasers effect, but the points required to spec into them you are better off with phasers over the polarons.

Plasma energy weapons have a nice proc, but as most players have learned a handy Sci Team, Hazard Emitters, etc will clear that DoT right off meaning that you are just dealing damage. Thus I have found plasma energy weapons... lacking.

@(Unverified) Biggest thing to remember is to specialize. Being a Rainbow Warrior and using Plasma, Phasers, & Polaron just forces you to spend more SPs in different areas. SPs that could have been used on defense skills, engines, etc.

I used to run AP back in the day when they were the best available weapons (highest end stores only carried them), but I found that when I respecced to only spend points on phasers and use the points saved on other skills, I became more effective in PvE. I don't PvP enough to have compared the two, but for me, phasers and tetryon are the only choices.
