I wish they'd offer some cheap subscription rates - I occasionally see them selling the client (which I happily paid 40-50 bucks for on release) for cheaper than a 1 month subscription. It'd be nice if they actually started throwing out some bargains on subscription prices. I'd probably subscribe right now for 7.50.

@TortoiseCan No company would do that. The MMOs make most of their money on the subscriptions, not as much on the box sales.

um, if they qualified a sub sale so that only returning members could get a month for half off, then it'd be worthwhile for both parties and existing members...

...and I wouldn't see a problem with charging a single months sub, once, at the cost of the discounted 6/mon price say, when you want to help increase the population. The way some of these mmo populations start to dwindle would warrant the very short term money loss compared to the value of making the game look more like it's got people playing it.

Well, I don't necessarily fully agree with your point. I think that games like LOTRO (which I currently play) are offering way more/better subscription options than the standard 15/month. I just played LOTRO for 2 months for free because I owned most of the content. After reaching a point where I wanted to explore other areas , I subbed for 3 months @ 30 dollars, which let's me access those areas now and while subbing, I accumulate points to own the content to play later (when I don't feel like paying a sub).

Obviously Rift couldn't offer a similar model and maybe it wouldn't be a good decision for them to offer lower rates. I can just speak for myself though. And right now I'm not paying rift any money. If they charged less, they would be receiving my money.

@TortoiseCan Same here, with the both of us they already lost one full sub. On another domain i happily sub to Spotify at 5€/month and wouldn't do it for 15€/month.
Strange that we didn't see any big developers at least experiment in this domain. Do they really hope people will multi-sub 15€/months in an age where bandwidth/database/storage is now a very cheap convenience any grandma can buy at amazon/google/microsoft/etc (i mean the infrastructure cost per month per user is minor these days)

Tempting... but no. Don't have time to play all the games I want to play that I already have :S

@Lucidus I picked up EVE on Steam for $2 dollars a year or two ago. I still only ended up playing it for a few days.

So... I am new and all and maybe don't get this but is promoting Steam sales REALLY the kind of stuff this site should be posting?

@EuchridEucrow I took it as more of a heads up than a promotion; nowhere did it say that we SHOULD buy Rift, only that the temporary option is there.

Discounted subscriptions were given to founders, I wouldn't expect them to be offered to newcomers now.

@Seffrid
They pretty much offered a VERY VERY similar pricing a few months ago, only about 1$ difference if even.

@J45neoboy

yep, what you said. wasn't any difference in Founders price and the price given later when they were closing off those servers

But i don't expect them to give the $8 month price as a single month. that would certainly signal desperation or at least be interpreted that way
