Defiant. The Guardians were way too religious fundie for my tastes.

I would say I definitely had more fun leveling a Defiant but had much more fun at endgame on a Guardian.

Neither is better. For the FULL experience, create ONE of each faction and DO EVERYTHING!

(I do this in all mmos I play) And you will NEVER have to repeat ANYTHING, unless you make alts years and years down the road.

Take your time and experience both. When you lose a little steam with one, switch to the other - you choose, its YOUR time!

I went Defiant, partly because I'd played Ally for the previous 6 years in WoW, but mostly because their art style looked and felt so much different from that of any faction in any other MMO. Guardian felt very familiar and their look is very classic as far as the genre goes. Honestly it reminded me (at least from character creation through the starter quests) a lot of Order in WAR.

"I think Sanctum wins by a nose."

What? It's definitely the WORST capital I've ever seen in any MMORPG.

@Sephirah Sanctum is NOT the capital, Port Scion was.

I love both factions, it's so hard to pick between the two of them. Both starting zones are pretty epic, both have legitimate reasons for thinking about the world as they do, and I've enjoyed seeing how the storylines differ for the two factions at high level as well.

The two lower level Guardian zones -- the beautiful Silverwood and atmospheric Gloamwood -- I much prefer to the somewhat unexciting Freemarch and dreary Stonefield. Even though dungeon finder has made both starting dungeons accessible Realm of the Fae was definitely the winner there too. And there's a lot of good lore on Guardian side, which I appreciate.

On the other hand, I'm not much for religious fanaticism, and you have to wonder when you play the Defiant starting zone and see that the Guardian leaders have become corrupted by Regulos in the future while Asha & Co. are fighting to the bitter end -- not that I had much respect for Shyla and her skimpy bikini and pink hair to begin with. The Defiant side also has more compelling NPCs, with the story of Adrianna Weaver's revenge and the friendship between Uriel & Kira.

I think I'll just keep playing both factions. :)

Though I play mostly Defiant, the Guardian starting levels I enjoy a lot more..
but IMO, they keep things balanced just fine

In my fling with RIFT, I had a hard time feeling anything for either faction. I gave both sides a fair and equitable try, even though I had friends who were strongly egging me towards Defiant. In the end, neither appealed to me; both sides instead came off as blinkerdly self-rightous to the point of stupidity, while neither presented me with characters that I could really get behind.

I found the Guardians to be incredibly bland and generic, the Default Good Guy Army that is so stock in trade to pulp fantasy that they could be changed for just about any other generic good guy faction and nobody would ever notice.

Conversely, I liked the lore behind the Defiants a bit more and certainly found the cocnpet ionteresting, but found their races unnapealing and their character to be far more self-important (which is saying a lot). Finally, I took an instant dislike to Asha and wanted to punch her in the face. No idea why, but the skank-plate probably didn't help.

Personally, I rolled Guardian just because I'm not a big fan of technology in my MMOs and I thought they were a bit more fantasy-themed. I also think Sanctum is a pretty awesome major city. It's easy to navigate and interesting to look at. I found the Defiant's capital was too spread out.

While my significant other compells me to play Guardian, I always secretly wish that we had played Defiant instead. But then magitech is always my sort of thing.

Still, playing along with the religious fundamantelist zealotry is always fun.

"In Silverwood's favor is the fact that it contains two ports, while there's only one in Freemarch."

If by ports you mean "porticulums", Freemarch has had two for quite a while (was added in a previous patch)...also, with 1.5 (according to the patch notes) both Silverwood and Freemarch added and additional port for a total of 3...so I would say both areas are on equal footing with regard to this...and with the LFG it is very easy to try out the other faction's dungeon from those zones...another toss-up unless you consider the ambiance of Iron Tomb is 10 times better than the Realm of the Fae...

Defiants lead the way!!!

There's two ports in Freemarch. One in Knight's stand and one in Meridian, unless I've missed a port in Silverwood repeatedly, there's one in Argent Glade and one in Sanctum.......I haven't seen a 3rd.
