Well, this was an interesting article and, I think, applies even beyond EQ into other games for its state-of-affairs on similar games offering such a server vs. established ones.

Nice article, and this is how my experience has been with other western F2P games. Players spend money on things they actually want and those small perceived advantages that get the ragers' panties in a bunch simply aren't necessary in these games; and if it is then your typical player is more likely to just not do that bit of content or come back at a higher level than pay money to complete it. So what you end up with is a small boost that most feel they can overcome ingame with a higher level or getting better gear vs vanity items that let people look awesome. It's no surprise which ends up winning out more often than not.

What actually happens ingame is usually quite a difference from the doom and gloom you always end up seeing on the forums and blog comments, but what else is new. People imagine up these deliciously frightening scenarios like raiders forcing all of their members to buy X power boost from the shop if they want to attend, but realistically not only would it be extremely difficult to prove someone bought or actively uses some shop-bought consumable, but most people simply wouldn't put up with it and that guild would quickly find themselves largely member-less. The F2P haters love to claim these sort of things happen in these games as their excuses for why cash shops are horrible, horrible things, and they just can't seem to realize that EVERYONE agrees those things aren't worth the money which is why people rarely use them or expect others to use them.

When I created a Silver account on Freeport on launch day last year, I wasn't really planning on moving there full time. I originaly started on the Steamfont server back in 2004, long since rolled into Oasis, but for most of my seven years in EQ2 I've played on Test and that's where I expected to stay.

Freeport just turned out to be a really enjoyable place to be and I've ended up playing there almost all the time when I'm playing EQ2. I have Bronze, Silver and Gold (via Station Access) but it's almost always the Silver account that I play. The only restriction that would cause problems if I didn't have my Gold account would be the Plat cap, but even that can be worked around using the Guild Bank.

It would be pretty easy and pleasant to play on Freeport and pay nothing at all, and it would certainly cost less to buy the few things you might need from the SC shop each month (mostly unlockers) than a monthly sub would cost. If I was starting fresh now I don't think I'd sub.

Yeah, I pushed up to a Silver account using the free SC points SOE gave after they got hacked, so that basically costed nothing to upgrade and stillhave some points leftover.

Freeport seems rather busy with low level toons all over the place and high level guilds recruiting a lot. It reminds me a little of when I played several years ago (long after launch) where the game wasn't packed, but had a nice flow and plenty of people running around.

I'm kind of worried that my little Brigand will get decapitated later because you only have a certain level of spell/weapon you can use I think and the mobs will get tougher (right now, it's np at all as a Silver and I run through mobs all the time).

Overall it is pretty good now. Just wish I could get some big slot bags cause the Silver package does hamper you a bit, but I guess that's where SOE has to get some money for bag slots.

It's interesting to note how many of us play both Live and Extended, or came to Extended from Live because of the freeness. I guess that tells us that if you're really into your EQ2, you'll take it in whatever form it comes, without either raging about it or getting some kind of snotty attitude on.

Personally, I play Extended most of the time now, having copied my oldest and best characters over from Live, and treat myself to a month or two of paid action here and there when I can afford it. No biggie.

Hello

I miss having international servers on FFXI. sure it was weird at first using the in game translator but i met people form all over the world and that was half the fun. While i understand their are issues with latency i wish more games would either have single servers or non-regionally based ones.

I have played LOTRO, DDO and EQ2X extensively. I started with DDO, when it 1st went free to play. The F2P players were MUCH nicer than the established players and the only thing that turned me off about the game was all the negativity from the established base both on their forums and in game. So part of what EQ2X has done with a separate server has been nice. DDO is a a helluva game and I fully intend to go back and play my toon there someday. I just do not have time for than 1 game at time. I think the cash shop is done better there even though I feel EQ2X is a better value. I felt good about my purchase there and I spent a much more there than I have with EQ2X. We will see how it ends low term. I like purchasing permanent unlocks for content or features. I have purchased item and spell unlocks in, EQ2X plus I put very expensive stuff on the broker with credits but I purchased my points with Walmart cards and activated them on a double point weekend, I can unlock stuff for a VERY long time, probably longer than I will play without ever needing more station cash.

LOTRO is a more featured game than DDO and there is a certain amount of magic that playing in that world does to person who grew up on those books like I did. However, the LORE police that must be appeased in that game inhibit it from having features that many of us consider commonplace. The biggest thing for me is travel, they have done some things to help that BUT it is not enough. I love the beauty of the graphics in the game but my time is too valuable to sit on a horse and wait while I travel the same route I have MANY times before. Can’t do it. As the world grows I see becoming more of a problem. Try to level through Moria as a free player and talk to about travel. If the game had a portal system similar to EQ2/WoW I would probably never play anything else. It is hard not to root for Turbine and support them, really good people there. There are other things that the lore causes gameplay issues but it is the only thing I can’t live with.

That leaves me playing EQ2X and loving it. I am truly annoyed with SOE for botching the launch of EQ2. I tried it twice and it was SO bad that only F2P got me to try it again, YEARS later. There is so much to do there for so little money. It is a very polished game, full of every feature a game can offer. The housing/guild and crafting features are industry bests IMHO and all can be done for free. I know people who spend all their time just getting stuff for and decorating their houses, the options and room for creativity is unparalleled. Our guild house is simply amazing
