Hey look, crafting news! Yep, there is more to MMOs than combat, and Turbine has long fought the good fight in regard to giving tradeskill fans something to chew on.
The latest Lord of the Rings Online dev update shines the spotlight on crafting in the Westfold, which Turbine describes as an "all-new crafting tier [...] filled with valuable natural resources, sought-after ancient artifacts, rare recipes, and powerful crafted items."
Unlocking the new content happens by way of mastering your particular profession's supreme proficiency tier. The expansion also gives you more options in the form of a new reputation rank for the game's various crafting guilds. Furthermore, Turbine has eliminated component recipes in the new tier to "reduce the amount of time spent crafting intermediate ingredients." Finally, there are also a couple of changes to resource gathering, including yield tweaks and the ability for Farmers to produce crops individually or in bulk. That's not all, but you'll have to head to the official LotRO website for all the details.

I was disappointed not to see an individual overview of each crafting profession. It seems like we've seen bigger changes to crafting in previous non-expansion updates.
I also don't like the idea of recipes always dropping in stackable unidentified scroll cases. It sounds like this may make rolling on recipe drops more complicated while in a group.
P.S. -- The "More coverage" link in this article seems to be broken.

The crafting guilds in LOTRO strike me as a useless waste of time and materials (and shards) for marginal advantage. And the hidden Cash Shop fee to advance beyond the first tier is a vile, sneaky cheap shot. For shame.
Components never bothered me much. A couple lucky rolls while making components means you can stretch your materials for another assembly or two.
The farming changes on the final tier will be a great relief to the two players that got that far, I'm sure.

The primary advantage to crafting guilds thus far is that once you max your rep with one you can then craft the best relic for your LI's fourth slot. Since that slot requires a crafted relic and the best of these are bound to you the moment they're made, it is good to be able to make them.
That being said, it's a ton of money and time spent to be able to create one item -- no matter how good that item might be.
Hopefully the new items will make it more worthwhile. But the only way that's possible is if the best once are BoA as well. Otherwise, you could just buy them from other players more willing to slog through the crafting treadmill.

Farming (and, by extension, cooking) is by far the easiest/quickest crafting profession to level in LOTRO. It's not even particularly expensive.

It's true that you can raise farming by buying everything you need from the vendor, but the results are pipeweed (useless), vegetables for crafted food (useless) and rare flower byproducts for dyes (nearly useless).
There may be completionists who max it out for a title or rp flair, but I don't know any of them.

@Yukon Sam Of course, there's no rep vendor food that provides in combat regen, that I've been able to find. That's a pretty huge difference, especially when leveling as a class that can't heal.
I've found having a supreme master cook both fun and profitable.

I love LotRO's crafting system. It's the only game I've ever played that had a viable system: you can craft stuff you can actually use and which is pretty damn near instance and raid drops. Turbine's been really good about catering to the non-raid crowd. I hope they continue that trend.
(Though I do dread grinding more reputation with the crafting guilds.)

Less materials needed is a good thing IMO. Making light/medium armor was very tedious before and now it's streamlined and much more cost efficient. Overall crafting is much better in RoI than it was before. Not so much for low level crafting alts though.

This. So many of the armor and weapon craftings were just tedious and time-consuming.

That specific aspect of the system "wasn't for" MOST people, apparently, or Turbine wouldn't be getting rid of components. Loots like you're the one it's "not for" :p

Use of the term "dumbing down" proves that someone doesn't have an actual argument for why a change is bad but needs to prove to themselves and others that they totally know what they're talking about (which is strange, because it should be obvious that it'd show clearly that you don't once you post your comment).
Crafting components wasn't difficult. It didn't require thought or skill. It wasn't a badge of honor or compelling gameplay. It didn't deepen the game in any way, and years from now people won't think back fondly of their early LOTRO days spend crafting leather pads so they could make something else with them. They were a time sink that made gathering materials and crafting take that much longer.

The removal of "intermediate ingredients" might be a curse or a blessing.
To decide that we need to see the final numbers of crafting xp.
In the past, you would have gained 4 xp from the component (lets say a Leather Pad) and then 6 xp from the armor made with the component for a total of 10 crafting xp.
If the amount of crafting xp is now only 6 xp for the armor itself, raising your crafting skill will be a major pain.
Also, with no critical results on the intermediate ingredients, we will need more materials than before.

One thing I like about the crafting of component recipes is that you can use rare materials to boost the crit chance of producing additional components. So instead of getting 1 component, the crit will give you 3 instead.
This is useful for components that require comparatively more materials. So basically, you can choose to forgo the increased chance to create crit version of the finished product for the increased chance to create more ingredients (and hence, create more finished products).
Taking this away seems like a stupid nerf. It's already tedious and annoying to farm all those animal hides to level tailoring.
And I thought component recipes was a way to promote interdependency among crafting professions so there is an economy when X profession can supply components for Y profession. Isn't this why LoTRO has the pre-fixed 3 crafting professions, so people can't do everything by themselves?
Yeah, I guess in today's MMO in which people want to do everything by themselves, interdependency is out-of-fashion. Heh.
