Judging by some of the comments I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised. The general mmo playing public doesn't really seem aware of the current state of the game. The experience is so much better than it was in January or even earlier this summer.
It probably doesn't help that Massively no longer runs a regular DCUO column. Sure press releases get posted, but no one on this site is relating the DCUO player experience as it evolves.
Things people might not know about DCUO:
The game breaking bugs have been fixes and new bugs are resolved relatively quickly.
The Megaservers have made it much easier to find other players.
The DLC added Hard Light as a powerset which also introduced new mechanics that make Hard Light behave more like a weapon skill than a power.
Tons of new content has been added with each of the 4 Updates and the DLC. New since launch are: 2 solo challenges, 1 mid level mission, 4 new duos, 6 new Hard Alerts, 1 new Arena PvP match, and 3 new raids.
Anyone who quit or never played DCUO because of the bugs or because there wasn't enough to do should at least take the time to check out the free content. If nothing else, the billing structure looks like it will be set up so that you only pay when you choose to. If you want to wait for a few updates to come out before taking a month to play through them, it will be easy to "Wait for the trade".
If you didn't like the gameplay itself, the stuff that worked the way it was supposed to, you probably shouldn't bother checking it out. The UI is going to be PS3 centric and it is going to stay that way as long as the console subs outnumber the PC subs 3 to 1. DCUO is never going to be WoW with tights.

Not in the least surprised it couldn't cut it with a subscription.

Like Champions Online, the game design at launch still needed work.

Some things about it were really neat. But other parts sucked so hard it hurt to play.

Big meh.

If a game is fun, I'd be playing it already, regardless of the payment model.

If a game isn't fun, I won't touch it, even if SOE pays me $30 a money. I might think about it if it's $150 a month. Leisure time is precious, afterall.

lets face it guys, super hero mmos work better as F2P than Sub. theres really only so much you can do with it and without making something extraordinarily broken, your kinda restricted in what you can do. especially in terms of roleplaying. that said, DCUO is definitely a great game and i defy anyone to find a more smoother or natural playing MMO. such a good mmo.

I was a City of Heroes player for a few years (and therefore disagree about superhero MMO's not working under a subscription model), and I'm excited about CoH going F2P now that I'm a more casual player. I'm always happy to check out the competition, though, so I'm looking forward to trying out DCUO.

One thing I like in particular is the low barrier for Premium. I did end up paying $10 for Silver on EQ2X, but here I could just pay $5 for something from the store and get the added benefits, which is a lot more attractive. I'll still need to be convinced that it's a decent game, but it's a low enough barrier that if I just enjoy some of the aspects of this game and would feel like what Premium gives makes a difference, then I won't hesitate.

I remember DCUO was originally supposed to be B2P, and I believe that model would have been lovely for this game. This is what happens when you not only rush the game, but get greedy and charge a sub for a game that was planned to be B2P. This game COULD have been worth the sub if they had more than 2 cities, was glitch and exploit free (especially for PvP), and had more world content. I don't regret buying the game, because it was worth it for the first month when released, just not worth the sub after that. Anyway, I might mess around when it goes free. This might be what the game needs, but I have a feeling it's still much too late.

A lot of the answers sound a bit BS especially the why of it.

I read this as...
1) we didn't do it right and we lost a lot of money.

2) we trei do pocket rape people to get that money, they shouted us down.

3) We're going to offer "content" free to everyone, just not as often (unless your paying up)

4) free players will get shafted

5) we aren't now but will be selling additional powersets (that likely will be imba as per the norm)

I think you just described the F2P model overall

Being an unbalanced mess is what got DCUO dead in the first place, now they're gonna charge and let people "purchase" their imba status instead.

...

It'd be fine if it weren't the ONLY DC mmo, this is fucking depressing.

Though I LOVE dcuo the way it is now, f2p is coming because of the LACK OF PROMOTION from SOE, and DCUO isnt getting the support it needs. From the moment it released, dcuo SHOULD have been instantly promoted as SOE's flagship title. But alas, Smedley is still in power for some reason(doesnt he remind you of an ignorant, fat, bloated tyrant king that was handed he crown through bloodline? lol)

If this F2p/hybrid is going to work, Soe NEEDS TO ADD SOMETHING SPECIAL for the subscribers. 1 free vault ticket per day is crap.
Now, if they create a store and give people 500 or 1000 pt stipend, or give players that subscribe 20 raid tokens per month or something, then more willl subscribe. But if you are getting the SAME game except for a few tiny restrictions, most will be permium because its the same as the game isnow, minus a few slots here and there.

Please, for the love of GOD! WAKE THE FRACK UP SOE!!! Get rid of Smelly and hire someone that actually KNOWS something about the mmorpg community. He MUST own like 51% of the company's shares, otherwise he would have been gone a looooong time ago.

NO Smedley = Promotion = millions of players realize soe games exist(or still exist) = no need for ANY game in the soe lineup (except free realms) to go f2p

true to a point but SOE is notorious for giving as little as humanly possible and expecting a ransom for it.

So basically, the Ps3 scumbags have ruined the game for the pc players. What they SHOULD have done, is make it:

a) Like Guild Wars, where you pay 50bucks for the ps3 game and then play forever, and only have to buy xpacs. They could do the same for pc

b) make it just 10/mo

and the best one c) ACTUALLY PROMOTE THE FRACKING GAME! noone even know that dcuo exists!!!! hell, hundreds of millions of potential gamers dont even know mmos exist beyond wow or eq! lol

Also, I'm realllllly SICK of people crying and whining about paying a MEASLY $15.mo. If you dont have the money, then dont play. The truth is those that have NO LIVES and therefore no jobs, cant pay it with the allowance they receive from mommy and daddy.

$15/mo ..... If you play just 15 hours a MONTH! - thats only ONE DOLLAR for every amazingly epic hr of gameplay. If you play 30hrs a month, thats just 50cents per hour and so on!
You cant say its too expensive. If it is, you should be spending your time LOOKING FOR A JOB instead of complaining about something that doesnt truly exist.

The people that play 4-5 mmos at once for 15 hrs a day are usually the ones that complain, Wake up, play a NORMAL amount of time, get a REAL life. what amounts to $180 for an ENTIRE YEAR of 1000s upon 1000s of hours of gameplay (if you play that much) or the equivalent of seeing 18 movies in a theatre. its NOTHING.

Stop complaining and saying $15 mo is too much, when it is NOT AT ALL. Hell, most of the REAL mmoRPG players would HAPPILY PAY 30 or even 50 bucks a month to play their fav mmo(if gms would actually perma-ban all the vocal minority pieces of trash)

wake up whiney mcgee!

Also, PLEASE STOP looking at brand new games that are barely 6months old and saying "there isnt enough content" cuz thats BS!

1 - there IS plenty of content for new game and its ludicrous that you would compare it with a game that has 6 or 7 YEARS worth of content.

2 - maybe if you didnt RUSH through every bit of content in 2-3mos, and actually took your time to play the game CORRECTLY(how its intended to be played) then you would see, that DCUO as it is right now, if you make just ONE character for each faction, EASILY has at the MINIMUM, a years worth of content, and thats even if you play 2-4 hrs per day. If youre a loser who plays 18hrs a day. then just play and come back in a fgew months. Just because you dont understand that thats more to an mmo than getting to max level the fastest, doesnt mean the rest of us agree.

Seriously, is there anyone you HATE more than the vocal minority of mmo games? Its like they took the biggest pieces of human trash and said "you are pieces of shat - now go and play mmos and rruin them for all the players that play correctly" comon!

WAKE UP

So will the game be free to download, or will I still have to pay for it up front for a copy of the game but not have a monthly fee?
