Another holiday is just around the corner for Final Fantasy XIV players, but this one is a bit different than the usual fantastic interpretations of real-world holidays. No, it's Foundation Day, a day celebrating the formation of the original Grand Companies of Eorzea nearly a thousand years ago, starting on a day that will be quite familiar to anyone who has been playing the game for... well, just about a year now. (Surely there's no need to spell that out.)
Starting on September 22nd and running until October 11th, the event will see recruitment officers for each of the companies stationed in the three cities, attempting to elicit more permanent membership from the adventurers running about. Exactly what the event will entail isn't yet known, but it's a safe bet that it will involve company seals and tie in to the upcoming expansions of the company system in patch 1.19. It also hints that we may see that patch on an obvious date, considering that the event will likely have to be patched in...

Can I ask a dumb, but interesting question? Is this "triple A" mmo still free to play if you own the box?

Oh great, then another year of your "I want this game to succeed, but I really hate it because it sucks" posts.

@Tizmah What? They've removed the stamina gauge from battle (which also meant EACH ability had to be rebalanced with cooldowns and such), added two instanced dungeons, added a market wards search, a few holiday events, changed the party system, added new levequests, new crafting recipes, a mini crafting journal with a more in depth one coming soon, added targeting systems, got rid of the UI lag, added NM's, and next patch (which is to be released in the next month) they're adding airships, chocobos, getting rid of the physical level (again, a huge change that needed lots of rebalancing), adding the materia system, beastmen strongholds, and caravan escorts. That's all that I can recall anyways, I'm sure there more.

Incidentally during the game's own 1 year anniversary. Not coincidentally I'm sure.

Honestly, why in the heck would they want to celebrate the travesty of their launch day!? Sure its gotten better now, but back then it was ridiculously bad, ah well...

To highlight how far they've come, I guess?

Hey, I'm just guessing at intentions, not proclaiming their genius. (Though, to be fair, they have made quite a lot of progress when taking into account the hurdles and just how deep the problems go.)

The online installments completely ruined the FF franchise.

by this point they should just adopt the GuildWars pricing structure of "Free to play if you buy the box" and run with it, that *might* convince a few people who avoided it like the plague due to the launch reviews to give it a try and possibly even bring back a few others.

I guess all excuses are good for celebrating...

Bought this yesterday, installed it and it keeps crashing on startup. Updater doesn't even run.

Check your video card. Make sure it can actually run the game. I had the same problem until I upgraded my video card and updated the drivers. Anything less than an ATI HD 2900 or Nvidia 9600 means the game won't even boot up. Yeah, kind of silly really but the game looks gorgeous when you can use the high settings on the video side (if you can afford a really good card).

How is FFXIV? Is it actually worth playing? I was pretty interested in it before the launch, but after playing the beta, I was fairly turned off.

Depends what you're looking for. If you have the game it's f2p right now so try it out. I was turned off by all the negative reviews at launch so I waited a year and now seems fine to me.
