I don't know about you, but I am one part excited... and two parts seriously pee-o'd at SOE for this one. You could not release this years ago when we were all begging for it? Now we have till December 15 to play, then it is gone forever? I bet they do not even plan on making the code open source so people can emulate it.

Really SOE???? REALLY????

@belgeode

It's not like SOE has the power to say, "Well, here you go, have some free source code." Maybe if they had control over the IP, but Lucasarts is still involved with the development, and I'm pretty sure they don't want a free fan-made MMO with the Star Wars license competing with TOR.

And yes, I do know about SWGEMU, but that whole project has been about reverse engineering the game to make it work.

@belgeode This is the sort of dick move that moved me to ditch soe games altogether. Always so behind with their game improvements.

Not going to happen. SOE has patents tied into SWG design. Also someone has to have a contract with Lucas Arts to use the assets.

I'd imagine part of it is giving people a memorable sending off for the game. Lots of people will remember all of the cool stuff they did before it was shut down which would, hopefully, generate some good will towards SoE and their games.

I'd also imagine that maybe a few months after the SWG shutdown, we'll get a press release that goes something like "SoE is now announcing their new sandbox MMO: XXXXX!" People will remember all of the awesomeness they did for SWG when it was ending and get excited to see what they would do for a new game that ISN'T going to die in a month.

And that's not me being cynical or negative towards SoE. I actually hope they do something like that, I'd like to see SoE's take on a new sandbox MMO (especially if they don't have to worry about licensing issues/limitations).

@dudes

No way Lucas Arts wants a free Star Wars game out there that has a larger feature set than TOR.

@dudes It's not up to SOE....I'm sure SOE wouldn't shut down SWG when Vanguard is alive.

I don't play this game, but I can't believe they'd add anything like this when the game is literally ending in a couple of months time. It makes no sense!! Plus it sounds like a really nice feature (that should have been in the game way earlier?)

@Scrobes What about clone wars (soe again)? From what I can tell it's more feature rich than SWTOR :p

@yeppers Speaking only of birdwatching, there is a curious species that resembles the ostritch but is not one. If one looks for such a bird, one may find amusement in its form.

It's awsome that they're doing so much for the game now...but it begs the question why so late?

@Acharenus

They have been working on this update since last year. They gave a demo at the SOE fanfaire. When the announcement came that they were closing, they promised the SWG community that they would still release this update.

What Yellowdancer said! This update has been in the works for a long time. That they're pushing it out now so that someone can enjoy it before the end is awesome. Many other companies would have just blown the whole thing off and walked away.

From what I remember about the "worlds" in SWG they were so dam small you could ride across them N-S, E-W in about 10 minutes and there really wasn't much to see above the ground anyways. Plus you just would hit the terrain box border and skid along it anyways, not like you could circle around it. At some point it might have been useful to avoid the decayvilles that littered the terrain of harvesters and dead cities but the game is one nail short of being covered over in dirt atm so what's the point now?

@Amusednow

The point, as has always been the case with SWG, is less progression/convenience blah blah and more sandbox/roleplay/emergent gameplay options for folks with imagination.
