In June, we broke the sad news that Star Wars Galaxies would be shutting down this December. But if you were hoping to check out one of the best sandbox MMOs in existence before the final curtain falls, you're running out of time.
According to Sony Online Entertainment, only accounts that are active and in good standing on September 15th will be eligible for the sunset period and events, so if you want to play, you'll have to plan ahead and reactivate your account one last time to make sure your account is active on Thursday. After that, your account will remain active for free until December 15th, when the galaxies are closed down for the last time. Confused? Mepps on the official forums has an even more detailed explanation for all the caveats and what-ifs you can dream up.
Players meeting the criterion will also find that their accounts are flagged for free access to other SOE games (including EverQuest II and DC Universe Online) from October 15th to the end of the year, further sweetening the deal.
Finally, although the SWG TCG will remain in operation as long as the game does, loot cards cease being redeemable after September 15th, so grab your free loot cards while you still can!

Should have gone to F2P! Shame on them! Don't worry I'm sure Ewok's go to heaven. Ewok Genocide = digital blood on _their_ hands.

Part of me would like to do this for nostalgia (SWG was my first MMO), but with SWTOR still slated to be out by then...

I get this itch that says TOR doesn't ship till after SWG closes.
I am going to sign up, though. I would like to get some EQ2 Live time in.

Seems like this Sunset Event thing is a last ditch effort to make some money on the game before it shuts down... Pity both TOR and SWG couldnt coexist.

From how I'm understanding it, it's basically free access to those games until December 31st.

Sounds like you'll get access to all of them, just not until Oct 15. Not a bad deal.

Could've gotten in for free, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. The Galaxies I miss closed its doors in 2005. The game still running with that name is one I don't recognize.

Plenty of SWG things are exactly like they were pre-NGE. The crafting, the housing system(and player cities as a result), the roleplaying-friendly community, the space combat, the sheer amount of customization of players via both outfits and their character's model. You know, all the best things about SWG that people loved pre-NGE. No one played SWG for the combat system, not even pre-NGE/CU.
Plus for me, this was my very first MMO. I loved SWG for so long(both pre-NGE and some post) so I owe it to my baby to see it through to the end. You should too. Even if it's not the game you remember, can't you spare $15 to ride out the last 3 months free? It's 3 months for the price of one, and nostalgia alone makes SWG worth it.

I'm VERY tempted to sign up to try seeing the world before it shuts down....anyone here interesting in playing tour guide? Star Tours, as it were?

After playing a beta test for a certain similar game, all I can say is that I doubt we will ever have a Star Wars experience as fun, complex, and fulfilling as SWG provides. It's really a shame that this game is shutting down.

3 months actually, and giving you 3 months for the price of one isn't ripping off anyone so I don't see how you can complain beyond the typical "I miss the game and wish it wouldn't shut down" complaints.
