How is this game doing nowadays? I figure I may want to give it a try but want to check it out before I spend 15 bucks :)

I'm having a blast with Aion. Having returned after being gone for a year, I've been pleasantly surprised with the changes and improvements that have been made. It's certainly become one of the most polished MMOs out there, and the pvp endgame rocks, imo.

It's definitely one of the better MMOs on the market nowadays.

It's still got insufferable levels of RNG (I HATE YOU ENCHANTMENT STOOOONES), and there are some questionable balance issues, but those aren't issues you're really going to feel unless you try to really get into the PvP.

And if you're running solo, you're definitely doing it wrong. Aion is at its best in group PvP and in sieges. Especially group PvP. You don't need to have the best skilled players, just make some good friends and have fun. Getting into random 6v6 fights is definitely one of the highlights of my play experience.

Leveling-wise, it is indeed disguised grinding, but nothing new if you've played WoW, EQ, or any other such MMO. The key is to find a class that you enjoy leveling. If you can't find one, then, well, it's probably not the game for you. But if you can find one, it really is quite the fun experience.

I should note that there are some events coming up that will ease the grind further - with double XP, free token rewards, and other such lovelies making things a breeze for new players. Give it a shot, yeah?

Aion, in my opinion, has the best character creation and item customizing options around. I may be mistaken. One thing that brought me to the game intially.

That a side, one way to test your self is to simply delete your characters, storage, account, everything, and then start from scratch. Some folks do this anyway if their toon is killed, though i am not that hardcore (insane?). Entertainment is entertainment, and if you are tied to a character and cannot delete them, you have deeper issues.

I had a year bet bet with my brother and his friends, i played a certain title for a while and had years invested, the bet was at anytime he or his friends came over or we talked about deleting a toon i would do it. The first time was a bit tough, took me ten minutes to delete everything but its all in the thought process.

After one year of this........, (i found they suddenly came over more often, wonder why)....... i enjoyed a year of my winning bet, not that i needed the push, i talked smack, and i walked the walked. Games are still fun and i do not miss anything. (....*weeps*) Grin.

They want me to start playing MMO's again so they can come visit........(maniacal laughter)

"Entertainment is entertainment, and if you are tied to a character and cannot delete them, you have deeper issues."

Sorry, but that's patently ridiculous. It's human nature to become attached to something you've put time into, especially since a lot of people have affection for their characters and good memories that they serve as a reminder of. If you can delete a character with no problem, that's fine for you, but it's also fine for people to have issues with the idea of just getting rid of something they care about.

@Irem

Human nature...pffft (respectfully and humerously i pffft you)

Laugh, it has nothing to do with human nature, a totally different subject. Your a product of your surroundings and the way the people around you bring you up socially. Your norms and what you are taught is everything, you then build your own choices and personality from these experiences, you either have the will to do it, or not, its that simple.

You do not naturally latch onto a make believe character and want to bond to it because its ingrained into your dna. (Grin)

If I ask a person to destroy something they've created and they refuse, they don't have issues.

If I ask a person to throw away an item they have an emotional attachment to and they refuse, they don't have issues.

People form connections to things. A character in a video game is a thing. We can pretend that somehow it should be different because it's pixels on a screen, but people react toward their characters quite frequently as though they're tangible objects that they can form an attachment to. That's the way the human brain works. It doesn't know the difference between the rock I found at the beach when I was twelve that I've kept since then and the MMO character I've put hours into playing--it just knows that I have an attachment to both.

Feel free to delete your characters over and over just to prove that you can, but that doesn't sound like fun to me. In fact, it sounds like a great way to get burned out fast on repeating the same content over and over again in just so you can make someone else think you're really hard.

Even though it was relatively easy for me to walk away from the game, I must say that playing a Chanter was one of my favorite classes I've played out of any MMO. I loved being a dedicated buffer, and an underdog when it came to healing so I could prove my worth.

I took a break after my friend got banned a few months after 2.5. It always feels weird returning to an MMO as a vet and not knowing anyone >.> Well to me anyways...I'll be coming back 3.0 (I hope it's still doing ok in NA D: ) for sure. Maybe sooner @_@

Aion should give more reactivation events after every major patch.

@angryhoar As opposed to what MMOs? They give reactivation weeks basically after every major patch and they give again later this month for the anniversary.

Ahh... I will come back if we get a mount. I remember now, reason being I hated that game is running around in a no fly zone area is not cool.

With running scrolls for non-fly zones, who needs a mount? I get around just fine. Personally I don't care about mounts, or collecting different ones--they're just an extra icon taking up space on my precious hotkey real estate.

TBH I as long-time "veteran" of Aion can't say much difference between Aion now and Aion two-years ago (ok, ofc I can say that changed since then like how lvling of my alt is super fast ect.), but for me all these changes seem as "slow evolution" while for ppl who stop playing and return after long time it's sometime like "revolution" (my friend who played Aion one month after realise, stopped and back like 1-1,5 year later said it was a shock to see all these changes, since for me - who is playing Aion continuously 2 years - it was like small changes from time to time).

So, if you want to try it out, check out this account reactivation - after all it's free :P

Great article, and really impressive that you can find inspiration and good humor out of the tough times you're facing with the flood :3

I can relate to this article a lot; I officially went on an Aion "hiatus" starting a week ago, but I still can't stop myself from getting on each day just to do Crucible Challenge and "solo" Empyrian Crucible!
