Launch will probably be on the 20th then. Glad to see Freedom finally get some dates attached to it!

Not 100% finalized yet, but looks like my new Freedom characters will be a SR/KM Tanker speedster-type Villain, SR/MA Tanker jungle lord Hero and maybe, just maybe, a Grav/Time Controller Praetorian.

Let me get this right:

They want people to pay a subscription fee so they can try out the free version early?

@(Unverified) Think it's more meant as a thank-you perk for current subbers that is available to new subbers too. But those subbers are racking up vet time (for reward points) and cash-shop points in the meantime. If Paragon gave it to everyone for free, we'd not call it VIP headstart, we'd call it launch. :P

It's more people who are already paying the subscription price get access to the new stuff early.

@smartstep `Cash shop isn't the only thing new. The headstart gives you early access to new cotent as well. There's also the fact that you can reserve names that you like before the new players take one. It makes a lot of sense, actually.

Unless I misinterpreted your post...

I can't wait. There's a ton of events planned for next week. Invasions, official costume contests, and that's all in addition to the ton of new content.

opening a cash shop early screams of desperation and greed, and always makes a company look bad. It's like when games have "contests" which involve seeing who can spend the most $$ in the cash shop on some stupid thing, to get some other stupid thing as a reward.

..just sayin'

@Resurge I tend to agree with you -- when the game is in one of those never-gonna-release perpetual betas. When the game has been out for.. is it seven years for CoH?... it somehow feels more like a preview than a trick. I'd like to thumb through the catalogue early just to plan how I'm going to spend my existing points, personally.

Yea, I'm always leery of those games that open a cash shop while the game's still in beta. I don't really think that really applies in this case though. There's a fairly large content update that goes along with CoH going free to play and they're just opening the whole thing up to subscribed players early.

CoH has also been selling costume pieces and stuff for a while now (about 1 new costume set quarterly). It's just never been fully integrated into the game.

Er, you do know that us subscribers have been accruing cash shop points for a while now, so having the cash shop open up gives me the option to spend those points and just just spend money, right?

If CoH was some new, unknown, outsider then yeah, you could probably say that. But it's not. It's got more veteran status than all the commentators in this thread combined! Pointing the sly finger of desperation and greed at NCSoft in this case, is like pointing at your grandmother and saying 'Man, look at all that grey hair and wrinkled skin, she must be trying to fool people into thinking she's an old lady.

I'm a little old-fashioned where CoH is concerned. I fell in love with City of Heroes when it was new and not full of all this crap.

Objectively, I suppose this is good for the old game, in that the new changes and extra marketing may attract more players to try it out, or return, or even spend more than $15 a month on it.

Subjectively, the changes make me cringe. The shop interface makes CoH look more like Champions Online every day. The payment models and reward schemes sound so confusing they're even harder to dissect than EQ2X. Those are not good things.

Paragon City has stopped being an immersive -world- for me and turned into a big metagame-y mess of 50-cent costume pieces and various bars to grind for tokens. Sighs. I guess one can't love a game forever.

@Jeromai Why don't you come back when it's free to play, try out the new Sewer Trial, look at the new and refurbished zones, and then decide if you like it or not? You've got nothing to lose, and you don't have to ever pay one penny if you don't want to.

Actually, what I stand to lose is even more good memories of the game.

At some point I might just take a look again, but really, if just looking at screenshots and imagining logging in makes my stomach churn, I think I'll be forcing it if I go back for now.

Imagine, first I'd hit the lock where they only let me unlock 2 or X number of characters out of my 12+ on one server. I despised that when I tried out CO, and it'll leave a sour taste to see CoH copying that
directly from CO.

Then I'd run straight into the mess of "You have X number of paragon
reward points" from leftover vet badges and sit around struggling to
figure out the new tree so that I might maybe get some globals
unlocked.

First Ward will probably be locked away via a pay gate too.

I think Incarnate trials are also pay-gated. Which on the whole,
wouldn't be that terrible since the whole implementation of those were
what encouraged me to up and leave in the first place. I'd still have
the niggling reminder that they exist though, ruining the game's
community even further with the divisive split of opinions.

(I'm a big believer in the entire structure and design of a game
influencing behavior of the game's population and community. If a game subtly encourages cooperation, more people act with altruism. If a game's bottom line is grind your own individual achievement bars or
gear, you get selfishness.

CoH steadily went from the former to the latter with the introduction
of Inventions loot, Task Force and Alighment reward grinds and it
culminated in Incarnate slots and trials.)

Monthly signature story arcs are locked away under a payment of 5
bucks, says the paragon store page.

So I'd essentially return for a mission structure I can do in my sleep.
Select mission. Travel to door. Charge forward until the first group of
17 mobs. Slap down AoE debuff/control or have defensive toggles on.
Fire off AoE damage chains until everything falls down. Race to next
group and repeat until the mission end pops up.

Granted, it was fun for the first 5-7 years, but I hit a personal limit
for that specific gameplay experience some time back.

Oh, I guess I'll get to see the new tutorial zone. Assuming I'm not
forced to delete a character in order to make a new one to see it.

And the ugly revamped robe-less CoT.

Some of my best memories were searching for those little critters in
King's Row (Has anyone seen CoT? Whaddya mean they're on the ROOF?) and street sweeping in the Hollows. Who does those now? They're all racing through the gimpy levels with a sewers team to get to the "good stuff" of max level Incarnates. Never thought I'd see the day where CoH became WoW.

Ignore me, I'm just a bitter old git. :)

@Jeromai Okay, you've beat me into submission. ;) Stay away if you prefer, but the n00bs would benefit from a vet such as yourself showing them how it's done. But I understand if you want to just remember the game as it was and let it go. I had to do the same with Galaxies after the NGE, so I do get it. Still, you'd be a boon to the community, so just remember there's always a light on for you in CoH. :)

Haha, my apologies about the bludgeoning explanation, it kind of wall-of-texted out while trying to put the feeling into words.

I think it's a current blogosphere thing. Customers realizing the game no longer caters to them vis a vis devs changing direction to focus on different subsets of the playerbase. Just find it a little ironic that most are feeling this in relation to WoW, and I've got it bad with regards to CoH.

Anyhow, my original post was mainly to lament an ongoing trend of gamification (I'm not allergic to F2P and cash shops, but there's something very metagame-y about cash shop UIs, achievement/token/score grinding), but also to acknowledge that Freedom will likely be a good boost for CoH overall. Lowered barriers of entry means much better overall population churn over the long term.

Who knows, it may keep it going another 7-10 years, which allows me to progress to the point I feel like visiting again. :)

I'm not sure this applies to me. I'm think I am on the on free month thingy after I purchased the Going Rogue update 2 months back. So I'm not sure I am recieving any benefits stated above until I slot in another gamecard...even though my account is active currently. Can anyone enlighten me to this?

@Utakata If your account is active on Tuesday, you'll be able to log into the head start as a VIP no problem. Once your game time runs out, you'll have to resubscribe or wait until Freedom officially launches. Once it does launch, you can choose to play as a Premium player or use your game cards to become/stay VIP.
