Blocking in CO, and combat in general was great fun. Unfortunately nothing else in the game was.

I really wish I could take the force sheath advantage on energy shield. It looks so perfect for Foolhardy, but the extra defense from just tapping block every ten seconds and continuously attacking is seriously tempting.

@Issmir Force Sheathe's bonus resistance is REALLY low. The main reason to use it is the energy gains, not the extra protection. If you want more protection, Energy Shield is really a better way to go, especially if you get Laser Knight. Laser Knight gives you bonus protection while using melee attacks, and it even shows the shield on your arm while you're fighting. It's pretty nice.

@Patrick Mackey

I hear that. Honestly the problem I encounter more is not having enough endurance to pull aggro off team mates than being survivable. Ever since Invulnerability was changed to scale off of superstats, staying alive has been a lot easier.

I could either change my shield or raise my presence (10 presence on a tank. What was I thinking). but honestly I have too much fun with a giant robot clown.

"Blocking multiplies the effects of any heals you take by at least three times, making for obvious synergy.

Bountiful Chi Resurgence is a great way to take advantage of this, as always."

"Blocking doesn't work so well with clicky bubbles like Protection Field. The bubbles don't get stronger if you block, so there's a bit of counter-synergy there."

That sums up my annoyance with the blocking mechanic when I played CO. One of my first characters, perhaps even the first, had Protection Field and I found it very difficult to keep that character alive. That block actually interfered with one of my defensive powers was a mind-bending discovery. Conversely, anything that heals you while you block is practically a must-have. Just sit behind your block and you can go from 25% health to full health in fairly short order, even with two or three bad guys beating on you.

All in all block was a nice idea that was poorly implemented.

The game is so short on new content that massively's columnist has to detail every bit of gameplay to keep the flow of new column every weeks. In a month he'll be forced to write a column about the login button.

Fire Shield triggers Clinging Flames when you block close-range attacks but the Clinging Flames do not trigger Thermal Reverberation. The damage from Clinging Flames is minor, so I wouldn't take it just for that. I would definitely retcon out of it; it's not worth the power pick when you could get something else better.
