"Given Garriott's current interest in social media gaming"

I'd say that's a pretty big reason to say that it will almost certainly not enter the MMO arena again for the foreseeable future.

UO was my first MMO and still gives me the fondest memories. I would be excited for a more modern UO but can see it ever happening. But if it did i would be all over like a fat kid and cake!

It would greatly depend on the sequel...

Both UO2 and UXO had some promise, that's for sure.

Could be exactly the right game to bring back a good, quality sandbox MMO title that doesn't trap itself with the four most basic and simple flaws that have ruined every quote "sandbox" MMO since UO -

1. Grind
2. Gear
3. Lack of content
4. FFA PvP

@heerobya I don't think there should be forced FFA PVP. But separate servers for them, yes.

@Tizmah

Funny that UO learned that lesson a decade ago but all of these "new sandbox" games since completely igored that, one of the most important lessons UO learned.

@heerobya "Sandbox" has become inextricably linked with FFA PvP because in almost 2 decades it's pretty much been that way. Any developer that wants to make a sandbox mmo is gonna have to drag the genre kicking and screaming to the next generation.

Which is why almost every sandbox attempt has been a steaming pile of crap. Sandbox game does not have to have FFAPVP.

Yes I would absolutely play another UO.

@heerobya

Or not a separate server, but a different area for it that was optional

Free for all player versus player.... its not that it needs restricted it needs to be done well.

Just like in real life their are punishments for killing and harassing other people, so their should be in a great sandbox... but you should never be absolutely safe.

No where should be safe, but there should be guards etc and reasonable punishment for those that want to grief.

Funny, I always considered the FFA PvP one of the best things about UO.

SWG was a sandbox MMO with no FFA PvP.

I missed the golden age of UO since I was just a kid then. While it sounds like pretty much the best MMO in existence, I can't bring myself to play it because it's so old. So yes, I would love the chance to play a new UO (as long as it kept the same core mechanics).

I just don't trust EA to make another Ultima game. U8 and U9 were terrible. UO is what it is, but there's no way EA would release a game like that in this market. A new UO would be a WoW clone with signposted quests and holy trinity-based class system

While the pre-EA Ultimas were great, I don't think a similar game would sell well to today's audience, partially because it would have the Bioware label slapped on it, and that would really alter players' expectations.

Oh helz yeah!!! If they decided to work on an Ultima MMO in full 3dm it would def be amazing and garner plenty of attention.

go for it S! UO ftw!

I loved the Ultima series and Britannia, and any real revivial would be great.

No.

The magic was in the community, not the game. You can't recapture that with today's MMORPG community.

But the undesirables would wash out if the game were designed the right way

Considering this one would likely be in the same vein as WoW and be spearheaded by EA rather than Origin, yeah, not a chance. As it is I wish they had let UO's name get buried with dignity rather than drag around the patchwork zombie abomination they have now.

UO is my favorite game of all time. I loved everything about it including the FFA PvP as people call it now.

However, because of the realities of the marketplace, FFA PvP results in attracting 95% jerks because there are so many gaming options out there. Back in the day, UO was the only choice and every type of player lived in an amazing interactive lawless world.

I would love a new UO if its a sandbox, not based around gear, and there was tons of interaction with the world and without FFA PvP. Order/Chaos guild wars would be great, especially if only those wars had full loot. =D
