Even though the PC-using EVE Online and the PlayStation 3-playing DUST 514 gamers may be separated by platform boundaries, CCP fans in both worlds will be joined at the hip in an odd, first-of-its-kind symbiotic relationship when DUST 514 launches. It's an intriguing prospect, but fans are wondering just how CCP is going to pull it off and how the two games will interact in practice.
DUST 514 producer Thomas Farrer sat down with Gamasutra to shed some light on the nitty-gritty details behind the auspicious plan. Farrer says that the buzz over DUST isn't as big as the team hoped, but he thinks this is due to the project taking a completely new angle on the industry: "Often, particularly in first-person games, games often look very inwards when it comes to how they are trying to innovate or move things forward. What we've tried to do is look more outwards."
Farrer outlined how the two titles will share the same economy, corporate structure, and social features. He says that the already-constructed EVE Online universe was a boon to the team's plans, since the established setting provided a perfect backdrop to a persistent shooter MMO, and that the two teams are in constant contact with each other as the project goes forward.
Of course, some computer players are put out that DUST 514 will be exclusive to the PS3, but Farrer acknowledges the slight possibility that it might not always be so: "Right now, we're pretty much just entirely focused on PlayStation. That's what we're going to remain focused on at least for the foreseeable future. But you know, who knows what happens in the future."

IMO, they shot themselves in the foot making it PS3-exclusive. At least release it for PC first, and work on the PS3 version to release later if you only had one choice of platform for launch.

@Raikulxox Really... I can't imagine what they're thinking here. Their entire fanbase is on the PC, by definition. I get the "trying to expand your market" bit, but... there's no hook. They've cut out their "buzz" base, so no free advertising for them, and they don't have the marketing department for the media blitz that would be needed to get this into the eye of the average PS3 player. It's just a failure all around.

Absolutely. By making a game like that and releasing it only on the PS3 they essentially already set in motion the lack luster sales it will get.
Down right silliness to have done that. I get the "Microsoft and PS3 won't let us do online games across both consoles so we have to pick one" crap that the giant corporations set up. At least release it on the PC, especially when the whole player base of the other title is ON PC.

The major FPS sales on consoles have gone to XBox.
Also Console software sales has dropped off amazingly in the past year or so and analysts expect it to keep going south. Essentially consoles are dying.
Online PC games sales are going up.
Factor in how long it will take them to get it done and release it and the PS3 simply isn't the way to go.

consoles will be fine. yes, the 360 usually outsells the Ps3 when it comes to major FPS releases, but that doesn't mean these numbers are inconsequential. look at the last two COD titles in their first 10 weeks of american sales:
Modern Warfare 2:
360: 6.2 million
Ps3: 3.3 million
Black Ops:
360: 7.3 million
Ps3: 4.3 million

you can supplement these stats with a quick browse of vgchartz.com. you get the idea pretty quickly that consoles aren't 'dying,' as you put it, but are consistently moving systems and games year after year. i should mention too that the Ps3 is now showing some of its long-touted longevity as a worthwhile system, and in the last couple years has started to outsell the 360.

what can we take away from this? well, your opinions were more or less baseless. oh yeah, and DUST will apparently be working on sony's next-gen console too, so there's that.

@Raikulxox I dont like EVE's game play but love the EVE universe and concept, I also like Dust 514's concept. Playstation only seems like an unbelievably stupid move. It should primarily be aimed at PC with consoles secondary. CCP just wanted a piece of the console shooter money and werent thinking clearly.

@(Unverified) They wouldn't make a so obvious mistake as you guys are calling it, obviously there are many factors in play here that most of us outsiders can't know. But what do you know, all you dumbshits coming here and saying it should be better if they also released it on PC like there are absolutely no reasons for them not releasing it.

Has anyone, ANYONE, ever thought that CCP isn't trying to lure EVE players to this game, but an entirely different set of players? Like, the PS3 FPS crowd, or FPS gamers in general, to work with the existing EVE population to accomplish bigger and better things? Can you imagine, for example, a corporation hiring a bunch of ground mercs to set up a surface-to-orbit turret on a planet in null-sec that will assist in the battle to take out an enemy POS? Or a mining corp that pays top ISK to take down a competing corp's moon operation? All you people complaining are thinking one dimensionally, not looking at what COULD be, too busy QQ-ing. Personally, I'm looking forward to this game and what it will do for GAMING: expand and connect two realms of the industry, giving players the chance to build lasting relationships with others regardless of platform. After all, it's about time this whole "segregated gaming" thing, with 50 different consoles and systems on which to play essentially THE SAME GAMES, become a fond memory of the past. Let's embrace change, people.

I'm just concerned at how they mix it, if its interdependent than does that mean if the space-side part of your team gets absolutely WTFBBQ pwned then DUST players who gathered for say a planetary invasion will be sitting in transports playing with themselves?
Much like sov fights in EVE today. You gather up say 400 guys, enemy fleet is at 200 then they light a cyno beacon and 100 Titans and Supercarriers come in and the 400 guys in battleships are told to stand down cuz the other team hit the "I Win" button.

You people need to get your facts straight lol. I read this and can't help from rolling my eyes. I am an avid gamer on all consoles and pc and yes, console sales are flagging. But it not because people are migrating back to the pc. It's because this console generation is coming to a close and the economy is in decline. I'd really like to see where you pull the info that pc game sales have risen of late too cus I have a hard time believing that as well. Maybe a short spike if a hot PC only title or a few have come out but that would just be an anomaly and not a trend of people moving back to pc gaming.
It's incredible how much misinformation is in these comments throughout. The reason DUST is a PS3 exclusive as stated by CCP is that Microsoft wouldn't allow them to run it off there servers. Therefore the whole idea of integrating dust and eve would have been tossed right out the window if they released on the xbox. Sony is allowing them use of there servers to run hosting hence why its there. Frankly a no PC release is a good idea too, for now anyways. Console shooters are going to outsell PC everytime. I enjoy PC shooters a lot more then console, but console is more accessable to the masses and thats just the way it is. If there goal is to expand, a pc release will not achieve that. All they would end up with is a bunch of eve players buying dust and playing both games and in some cases pulling there subscription from on game to focus on the other. Which seems rather counterproductive if there goal is to grow a new market. Sorry for the wall of text, but I'm so sick of the endless comments bashing almost every game on this site and throwing opinion out there like its a fact every human should know.

The buzz isn't big because they played the microtransaction card too early. In addition, they're scrambling to revamp zero-sec space because of the planned tie-in--presently the "interaction with EVE Online" would be limited to a few very powerful corporations, effectively shutting out the rest of the MMO's players, and leaving the much-vaunted link to the MMO a 'rich man's hobby.'

I'm glad CCP concentrated on making a shooter for the least-popular platform in existence rather than fixing their buggy-as-hell, soon to be hybrid pay-to-win MMO. Can't wait till introduce the in-battlefield store where you can buy a monocle.

I think that if they ever carried through with the idea in that memo and offered better ships or weapons through the cash shop, EVE players would revolt en masse.
Honestly, it would probably be the death of EVE.
And monocles would look awesome on infantry, poor eye protection notwithstanding. Imagine how intimidating an army of gentlemen would be!
