If you've been searching for a way to spend more money on EVE Online, CCP has just announced a bulk discount on its PLEX currency. What is PLEX, I hear a few of you asking? It's shorthand for Pilot License Extension, and it takes the form of an in-game item that provides one month of game access. The kicker is that it may be legally bought, sold, or traded for other in-game items (or cold, hard cash). The system was originally put in place to combat third-party ISK trading, but many long-time EVE players have amassed enough wealth to enable them to buy PLEX and avoid paying the regular monthly subscription fee.
For a limited time (through September 16th, to be exact), CCP is offering 13 PLEX for $199.99, and the one-line press blurb on the official EVE website encourages you to "play the market, pad your wallet, and build your empire."

Do people believe that PLEX makes CCP money. Every PLEX cashed in is another player who doesn't have to pay their monthly subscription. Sure PLEX costs a little more (normally $2.50 and that is supposed to be for actual overhead), but this scheme would be giving them almost nothing. And since this is likely to increase the supply of PLEX, but will do nothing for the demand, the market price will likely fall. So more people will be able to not pay CCP their monthly fees. Since CCP employ actual economists, it's unlikely they expect this to make them fat piles of cash that way.

@aaradun The sad thing is they burned the bridges with their most ardent defenders. It's still the only game with such risk and reward out there, it appeals to a very diverse set of players, and they've gone and messed it all up because they're bleeding money on two fronts (Dust, World of Darkness) with nothing but luke warm reception to show for it. The rush for them is on to monetize as much as EVE as possible before their investments go tits up.

Yes every plex cashed in is a player that doesn't have to pay a monthly fee. But someone is paying a fee, that is higher then the monthly fee, for that plex in the first place.
You don't lose money just because someone else is paying money for something they trade for virtual items.

Uhhh every Plex purchased is money made by CCP
See it works on a similar principal to F2P in which it does not matter who buys it simply that it is purchased. Once it is purchased its money in their pocket regardless of who uses it... hell regardless of if it is ever used.

@(Unverified) If I buy a PLEX and sell it to you for ISK, and you then use it to pay for your subscription, all that did was transfer your subscription cost to me.

Yeah...is this games monthly fee more than that per month? If not, what makes this a special one time offer? seems, if i am reading this correctly, you are actually paying a small amount extra than what the normal monthly is.. (assuming a 15/month fee)...

One plex costs 19.95 according to the eve online website. So you are saving 59.36 or somewhere around there for buying the special package of 13.
Most plex packages seem to work out to a about a $17 rate the deal works out to around $15 rate.

This is a truly sad attempt by CCP to make up some of that lost capital.
Wonder what their in house economist has to say about PLEX depression, lawl.

I love how every Eve article's comment section has turned into "what I hate about CCP" now...
If you don't like it then move on. You'll live.

Well it does go to show how the general perception of EvE and CCP is changing. If anything CCP should be looking at threads like this that used to be full of hardcore supporters, now populated by dissidence, as a sign that they are doing something .... not right.
But you know at best it would trigger the "vocal minority" card and be dismissed.
