@smartstep you mean the handful of costume parts and one Joker variant? Is that what we are calling a cash shop these days?

@Furdinand yeah its as if the very existence of a cash shop is what's bad, not what is actually in it. I bet not a single person whining 'it has a sub AND a cash shop!' could name whats even IN the cash shop. cash shop = bad! Tools.....

Great news DCUO fans: SOE will be doing some FREE server maintenance this month!
All active subscribers will get to enjoy playing the game because the servers will be turned on and functioning normally. Stay tuned here at Massively for an exclusive Q&A with DCUO's developers about some other free goodies in store for subscribers, including bug fixes and performance tweaks.

I'm assuming you're not a sub+cash shop fan based on the general tone of your posts, but if I'm wrong, disregard the rest of this.

Here's a bit of friendly advice: Save your vitriol for the companies who are doing the double-dipping instead of directing it at sites and/or writers who are calling attention to the problem.

Yes, I highlighted SOE's decision to do this because it's unusual when every other news post is about Cryptic, Funcom, and even other SOE games that are double-dipping. I understand being pissed off, it gets to me too, but your anger is misdirected in this particular instance.

@Jef Reahard They were originally planning to charge for this.

DCUO still carries a box price of $40-$50, a monthly sub, a cash shop, AND they were going to charge for this content until someone presumably woke up and realized how foolish that is for a game like DCUO.

I'm glad they reversed themselves on a boneheaded decision, but I'm not convinced that DCUO isn't part of the double-dipping problem. It's nothing against you Jef -- I really, really apreciated your Soapbox column from the other day -- but I have to laugh when SOE talks about releasing this content to "thank its loyal players" when this wasn't their original intent.

SOE did good for once, so they get a cookie. What's hard to understand? Positive reinforcement will encourage them to continue doing good!

@SocksForYou If you can actually list whats in the cash shop and then explain how its so bad, I might actually take you seriously.

Well I would say it's a positive move and I'll think about coming back to check it out but I quit in July after the paid DLC announcement and can't honestly say I've missed it. That ship has probably sailed.

Everyone complains about games that have subs and in-game shops but they forget that WoW has a sub and while they don't have an in-game store, they do sell little vanity items all the time that make them tons of money and nobody ever seems to freak out saying "Why can't I get this item free? I pay a sub for a reason!"... I'm not a huge fan of WoW but this sub and in-game store isn't exactly new

Thats pretty cool and personally i expected that.

I dont understand why they say "for subscribers" tho, shouldnt that be obvious?
Did they add a hybrid free to play model that i never heard about?

@Germaximus

Somebody finally realized some of the glaring wrong with their original plan to charge their current subscribers for this content, and then give it FREE to new subscribers. Or perhaps the fact that those who did purchase it, would likely have more problems finding groups than they do now for current content..because they would be waiting to form a group with only those others who purchased it...further splitting their already diminishing player base.

I'm guessing now Lifetimes get it for free as well.

Not bad as a bunch were asking for it.

Does DCUO even use its cash shop?

When I left a few months ago, it wasn't even active.

@stealthrider There's really nothing in there. Calling it a Cash Shop is being too generous. It's more like a Cash Kiosk at best. But things like facts aren't about to get in the way of people hellbent on whining like petulant children.

@Vagrant Zero

Aren't there some costume pieces, consumables, and a legends unlock in there? More to come I'm sure.

Only in today's world could a company announce that PAYING subscribers receive content for FREE in an MMO. By paying a subscription cost, content is supposed to be what they are paying FOR. Else why are they paying a subscription for a static game that never advances?
