File this one under "Stuff we Missed from Last Week": Thanks to the keen eye of reader The First Avenger, we've learned that Perfect World Entertainment plans to turn Star Trek Online free-to-play by the end of this year.
"And also Star Trek Online, after the acquisition, in fact Cryptic is working on the free-to-play model for Star Trek Online," Perfect World Entertainment's CEO, Kelvin Lau, said in a recent earnings call for Q2 2011. "This is going to be launched by the end of this year as well. So I think free-to-play model we have a bigger potential in US market and also in China market."
This news should be no surprise to anyone who knows that PWE's portfolio consists of F2P games, and it was inevitable that STO would follow in the footsteps of its older brother, Champions Online. We'll keep you posted on more details as they become available.

I think its natural for most subscription MMOs to do this. With the exception of WoW, subscription MMOs lose players over time at a higher rate than free to play MMOs, so by going hybrid they give themselves a temporary boost to prolong the life of the product.
Besides, it's not like it is a bad game... it's just not a great game.

The game isn't even 2 years old. If you have to prolong the life of a 2 year old product, it's not a thriving product -- it's on life support. Too bad. I know it'll probably be near a decade before another developer revives this IP and makes a game worthy of its legacy.

Considering the scope of the IP in question I find it hard to accept this game represents it. This is sad.

Glad they finally announced it. Honestly this game wasn't worth the 15 bucks a month, I can only imagine what they'll try to sell on the cstore now.

Haven't they been selling silly junk in STO through the cstore since launch?

should have gotten an Alienware Arena code, it gave some C-Store items and a free 60 day sub. That is what I did to try it out.
