I am looking forward to Firefall. Looks fun and it's FREE!

@Phenomen

Nothing is free! Firefall is sweet, don't get me wrong. However, their plans for their Free-to-Play scheme will make or break the game. Remember that whenever dealing with this new world of FtP MMOs. No amount of great gameplay/graphics is going to save a game from a bad cash shop.

Only going to be interested if we get a Borderlands-esque open world PvE shooter MMO out of it, not just another 3rd/1st person shooter game.

I'll be playing BF3 for that.

That's exactly what you're going to get out of it. Yes, there will be instanced PvP, but the first footage that was ever released of the game showed off a rather extensive, persistent, open world with a variety of locals, and even various vehicles, both player driven and automated, for traversing it.

Nice write up, thanks. I've been following this game for awhile now and I'm super excited for it. I couldn't make it to PAX Prime but I played the PvP at PAX East, and it was a blast. I think this game will definitely have a huge competitive e-sports presence.

Just an FYI, the devs have said that the dynamic events DO in fact scale based on participation :)

While it is nice to see the cons list finally, I am wondering just what suggestions we could come up with for missions? I mean this is only the release and we have only seen the staple content... but they mentioned in the community forums that no one really touched the hidden content. This could be the stuff the OP was looking for ;)

I have enjoyed watching this game build momentum over the last year or so, December is not to far off so lets sit back in cruise control and watch this baby burn :D

Nice read. I hope you enjoyed the PAX build of the game. :) Can't wait for this game to be ready to release, I've been itching to play this game since january this year. Here's a few questions:
How much damage did the resonating bullets (the explody ones) recon ability do damage and how big was the AoE? Did you try any other battleframes? How good was the recon in PvE compared to something like the assault? Did all the enemies have a critical headshot hitbox?

Great review, I enjoyed reading about your experiences. Although I wouldn't be to worried about the cons since this was a demo/small taste of what is to come. On the bright side I can't wait to hop into FireFall later this year, it will be a blast.

The dynamic events do scale, but not by a lot they want it to be challenging if there is only a few people there and only a little bit easier if there are a lot. The open world looks great from what I have seen looking forward to seeing how the players are supposed to work together to expand the explorable areas. I'm hoping this game turns out amazing and that it gains a strong competitive community because I have been looking for a game like this for a long time.

"Dynamic events don't seem to scale based on participation, which can result in players being overwhelmed if people leave the area" Actually they do scale, there's a certain minimum "chosen people" that might attack, but if there are more people in that region, more "chosen will spawn too (the chosen thingy is just an example, there will also be dynamic events that don't involve the chosen I think).

Firefall looks really nice, I can't wait to get my hands on it. The closed beta will start at the end of this week by the way.

Thats the whole idea. Since the chosen will then take over the town being assaulted and in turn triggering a dynamic event to take back the town.

Even if Firefall has some things going against, they seem be very minor problems that don't damper it in any way. That speaks a lot for a game that is going F2P compared to other F2Ps and even sone games that are on retail. I'm really looking forward to this, it looks like it provides a lot more intense action than any other game I have played. Consider me ready to jump into the thick of it!!

I have to wonder what you mean by an active doge, seeing as how this is a shooter, and "actively dodging" pretty much just amounts to moving out of the way. Unless you're referring to some manner of cooldown dodge roll or the like, then I personally don't see the need for it. Also, the movement issues that you mentioned during that dino encounter were likely due to your choice of Assault frame. The Assault is inherently designed to have the least effective jet pack and movement speed, as that is the trade off you make for its destructive potential.

"The lack of an active dodge/roll system was a bit of a pain in PvE, but I understand that it could be detrimental to PvP."

Not having played, I dunno if you need a target, but it sounds like we have a solution...

" The first was a jet boost, which allowed me to quickly charge in a direction. "

Thanks very much for the review.

"Quests/missions seem to be more of the same -- run here, kill this, deliver this, etc.; it's not necessarily a con, but seeing something new would be nice."

That's actually my biggest worry. OK, Firefall is a shooter with an open world... but EVEN if we are not talking about an MMO I would expect that open world to have MANY things to do... at least I want to expend a few years of my life playing this game (and that's what Red5 wants this game to be, they want to grow and expand Firefall to allow us to continue playing for many years). With that in mind, there has to be something else; it might not be an MMO but we need something to do in the open world... it cannot be the whole day about instanced PVP or going out with the thumper...

Anyway, there's at interesting thread going on right now in the FF forums about that: http://www.firefallthegame.com/community/threads/repetitive-missions.8258/

Thanks again!

Sounds great, I actually like the no scale of dynamics events they said they want towns to be lost and players must band together to recover them if they want to have access to a particular towns specialities, thats quite a great way to make permanent events.

Your article has an incorrect statement about dynamic events.

They WILL in fact scale up/down in difficulty based on the number of players participating. However the amount that the difficulty scales will be capped on both ends at prevent it from being impossible or a complete cakewalk.

An active dodge could slow down the gameplay a tad to much but you could be right there.

On to the part of the scaling: The dynamic events have a minimum amount of enemies that will show up, even when only one person is around. This is to make sure that the town can actually get overrun. It scales with the amount of people there, but there is also a cap on that to make sure to reward people for taking the time to show up and do these dynamic missions. (you got teleported to the zone this time, but most likely this will not be the case in the final game).

Very good read still, loved it very much :), keep up the good work! Hope to see some of you in beta, should be launching soon!
