so is this one worth playing as a true free to play title? how far can you go without spending a dime?

You can get all the way through to level cap and play the end game.

However, if you don't want to spend a dime;
(1) You will not have freeform characters. You will play an archetype, with preset powers.
(2) You will have limited bag space
(3) You will have far fewer costume options.
(4) You will only have 2 character slots

Is it worth it? That depends. I got a lifetime sub in beta and love the game, so I'm clearly biased. but when CO went free to play three friends of mine picked it up

One went gold after his first character hit 40. He plays almost as much as I do, and loves it. He's considering a lifetime sub if he comes int ocash.
One played two characters to 40, got bored and went back to WoW.
One played it for a week, got confused and stopped playing.

Short answer is try it and see. You might love it, loathe it or fall somewhere in between.

If you sign up with alienware, you can get 2 adventure packs free...so you will have all but one adventure pack. You can do all the content for free. What you will miss is all the cosmetic stuff. Unfortunately, most of the interesting play in CO is the cosmetic stuff. They still haven't put in an endgame.

It's definitely worth a try, because it's a very different game compared to your standard EQ/WoW/Rift MMO and it's a lot of fun. I would, however, argue that the "Free to Play" version of CO is most definitely a trial for the game and definitely not a way to play the "whole thing". In standard MMOs, your trial caps your level, because the content in the game is gated by levels and by crafting the trial in that fashion you get a taste so you'll spend the money on a sub. CO's content is, IMHO, largely about creating new characters and developing them. Gold players get a free character slot every time they hit 40, so there's plenty of people out there with over 50 level 40 characters because they're experiencing all the game has to offer - which is powers and customization. The F2P version of CO locks out this experience entirely, and unlike other games like LotRO, you really can't go gold for a month, then silver (free), then gold, etc. The game is clearly geared to guide you into paying a sub and then sticking with it, and the cash shop prices are utterly atrocious for the things that F2P players don't get.

It's worth a try, but once you go gold you won't want to go back.

@KDolo

It took me a solid 5 minutes of googling to find out just what that's supposed to be referencing, and I'm really good at searching for stuff. It doesn't help to complain about something when nobody knows what it is.

Just because you didn't know what it meant doesn't mean no one knows.

There is not a single person other than yourself who still gives even half a damn about that.

Champs is great, and works incredibly well as a side MMO if you're a hardcore player. If you're a casual MMO player, like myself, it's even better. Long live Champs.

Speaking of memory...I think it's the only thing that KDolo has ever posted in Massively. Just saying.

After playing CO at launch, I agree, it _IS_ hard to believe that it has lasted 2 years.

@Furdinand Downrate me all you want, CO's quick collapse into F2P pretty well makes my point about how bad it was at launch.

@Furdinand You're right. CO and STO combined to lose $30 million for Atari.

Despite doomsayers the game has lasted 2 years and it looks like it will stay for a while. I got an lifetime subscription at launch and I am enjoying the game even after 2 years.

As a superhero mmo it is pretty fun. Great customization and really nice(but still few) group instances.

Let's see what the event is about

Honestly, I thought it would be dead by now. It's pretty amazing.

That being said, I'm probably going to resub for the anniversary event and try out... um... well...

The anniversary event.

Hopefully the next comic series is going to start up in November and we can see some actual content. Hopefully.

Yup, new content for 2 hours of gameplay, then wait for 4 months for the next two hours.

I looked into information on this whole 'Sakura Park' thing, and I have no idea what the hubbub is about, but near as I can tell, Cryptic held a contest to name an in game park during the beta months. Sakura Park won, but a lot of whiny people were upset for some reason.

Some people then got super upset and remained that way post launch, never to play the game, and bash it constantly. Some of these people claimed that the contest was 'rigged' or 'mishandled', when really they were the only ones causing any sort of controversy. The whole thing died down after the internet adage of 'nobody really cared to begin with' kicked in.

I currently play CO (and pay for a sub) because it happens to be a game I'm having fun with at the moment. I predicted I probably wouldn't be playing the game past october when I first started playing, but now I'm not so certain. In any case, it's not a bad game, and if you want to spin your wheels on an MMO for a while, there's a ton of worse choices than CO. (even factoring in non-F2P MMOs). Sure you may be the type of person to enjoy Rift more, but CO can be quite a lot of fun, and a relaxed MMO experience.

"She'll perform her musical set once every hour until Monday, September 5th at 2:59 a.m. EDT"

Ummm, doesn't the event run until 11:59PM EDT on Monday? Or does Sapphire stop performing before the end of the event?
