Yeah because we all know that there is no room for any other games. That all players are like lemmings and will all leave their current game to play GW2 or SWTOR.

To be more serious, though I am not currently playing Rift, your comment is silly, there are millions of players and many of them play two to three games at any one time. There "is" room for more then one mmorpg, specially with how cheap they are to buy maintain a subscription these days.

Painfully young troll, is still a troll.

Rift keeps plugging along, putting out content at a record pace and retaining a large audience. i'm sure it unfuriates the drive by commenters who keep asking if the game is dead yet (its not), and upsets them how their favored horses are stumbling (WoW), or still haven't delivered (Tera, SW:TOR, GW2).

I'm willing to bet at least 1 of the 3 big releases on the horizon will fail horribly (probably Tera), but as a previously unknown developer with an unknown IP, i think Rift has far exceeded expectations.

They are putting out a lot of content, the problem is they aren't properly testing much of it. It does no one any good when you release burgers faster than McDonalds but they are all raw. That makes people sick. When 1.5 hits, it's going to be extremely buggy just like the Hammerknell is. That's not a troll, that's the reality that anyone can easily check for themselves.

Retain a large audience? That part remains to be seen after September. Going by how the large raiding guilds are reacting on RIFT's site, a lot of those people are tired of bugs and bored.

I think RIFT will be okay (100k subs in the long run along with whatever their other games pull in) but there is no doubt a huge downchurn in subs are coming to that game. It's already happened.

/sigh

They have the Public TEST SHARD for the playerbase to test the content... the fact is the playerbase ISN'T doing that. And a lot of the bugs are bugs that won't show up unless there are thousands of people interacting with the world... which on the PTS there are MAYBE hundreds.

Want less buggy content? Hop on the PTS and do stuff a few times a week, and see what happens. Till then stfu.

shouldn't he get paid for that tho? or at least not pay a subscription to test content?

GW2 probably won't hit MMOs as hard as people think, mainly because you won't have to pay a subscription. As a result, you could play GW2 and a separate, subscription based service. Don't forget, there are a lot of people who don't like sci-fi settings, even if it is Star Wars, so there's that too. I think in some shape or form RIFT will live on, and if they keep up with the competition they will be able to compete.

Depends on what you're expecting as far as a hit on MMOs. I'm not expecting Guild Wars 2 to kill off several MMOs, due to its lack of a subscription model.

I am, however, expecting Guild Wars 2 to finally revolutionize this stagnant genre.

Exactly. SW lore is pathetically convuluted and not everyone is interested in it.
Rift will probably see a decrease of subscribers but it will continue to chug along nicely.

It's so fun to see all the haters being proven wrong with the continued success of Rift. I remember when it came out a bunch of influential bloggers (Keen) claiming that it would only survive 3 months.
Yet it's been half an year sinc release and the game is in terrific shape.

I've play Rift, and while it was not the game for me (to much rinse and repeat sameness on the rifts for my tastes), it does have an appeal to some people, especially the raiders. It won't die quickly as some would suspect or hope. Nice animations, nice looking world, things you expect from a subscription model MMORPG.

It was nice to see Hanlin acknowledge the change in play styles that gamers have been asking for, and many games in development have been advertising as features, with his "We are removing barriers from people playing together" quote. I especially like the new solo instances, which is something that had been called for by players, and I wish WoW had implemented years before I gave that dying hulk away.

Good luck to them.

Like I have said in the past, the more games compete against each other equals the better customer services for we the peeps :D

High standards, better quality, more bang for our Buck!

I don't want to see any MMO fail for this reason!!!!

Just remember, just like every other "failed" MMORPG, if it doesn't hit 11 million subs it's a failure!

Trion will do what Trion does best. It will copy/paste every single new or innovative concept it sees from other MMO into their games, therefore it will probably remain profitable for a long while.

@Soulstitchmmo

No. Trion had a reputation for putting out polished work at launch. They've lost that title already due to the shoddy workmanship and rehashed/repeated content gear models/ mounts/ events that they do.

Not only does Trion keep snatching things from other games but they implement them incorrect and they don't work properly (cross server from WoW).

Without that headstart they had in beta where they could sit and shine that apple all day for launch, it's now crunch time and they are failing pretty hard to deliver good, competent products with each passing patch.

@Ren54 Trion believes in Quantity over quality. And it appears to be working for them. They have die hard fans who will apologize and make excuses for the fact that they are getting no originality in their game.

It's like watching network TV. There are networks who make original programming, and there are networks that copy that original programming. If you never change the channel, you won't know you're always watching a copy, and some people are fine with that.

'Ignorance is Bliss" should be Trion's new development slogan.

@Ren54 Trion deserves the anger. The developers there, especially Scott Hartsman have a history of lieing to the player base.

The company has no originality, they only know how to copy/paste hype and lie.

@Ren54 I prefer big content patches every 6 months over content patches 1/6th the size every month, but different people like different things, so if you like small patches every month that's cool.

but calling people crybabies for complaining about bugs is kinda harsh, specially when the devs try to fix said bugs as fast as possible (some the very next day if iI take your word for it), unfortunately a complex software that is completely bug free might not be humanly possible to make, so the important point is how many unfixed bugs there are, and how often they do happen in real play time.
