This is how the galaxy ends: not with a wimper, but with a mighty bang.
At least, that's what SOE hopes as Star Wars Galaxies' devs map out the final few months for this sunsetting MMO. Instead of weeping into a glass of strange blue milk, the team is issuing a challenge to the Imperials or Rebels. The stakes? The fate of the galaxy, once and for all.
SOE is ramping up the Galactic Civil War in the game, by adding new events and opportunities to win points for your respective side. The Civil War got a little bigger with the recent GU20 update that put the war footing on an interplanetary scale.
At some point before the December 15th shutdown, the game will tally up the score and determine who won -- for all time. Depending on which side comes out victorious, the ending of the game itself will change. If you're a neutral party, don't worry; SOE is making sure that you can participate in shutdown events as well.
Take note, as only players that subscribe or have an account in good standing prior to September 15th can participate in this final battle, since registration -- and game charges -- will cease after that date.

Sorry, but you clearly have not played SWG in a while. The game was doing just fine. Not a gigantic success, to be sure, but servers like Starsider were pretty darn full. New content was being added, the player community was active. This game could have - and should have - continued for a long time. You can trace its demise squarely back to LucasArts, who either promised EA that TOR would have no MMO competition or was simply hoping the displased SWG players would add to the frenzied masses slavering over TOR.
Meh - SOE has kept EQ, Vanguard and Pirates going with MUCH smaller player bases than SWG. If LA had not refused to renew the license, I fully expect the game would have lasted at least a few more years.

So... is anyone currently able to play the game if they want right now? Or is it restricted to just people who previously subscribed to the game?
I don't remember them ever announcing anything about opening the game up to new accounts/players for the ending.

That's the gist of it. If your account is paid up and in good standing on Sept. 15th, you're in until the end. No charges after that date for those that meet the requirements to continue to the end date of it's existence.
Pretty sure you have to be a paying customer on that date though. So just having an account won't keep you in.

@DevilSei New accounts are welcome, provided that they sub before the September 15 deadline. All subscriptions, sales, and new registrations are suspended then. Once you're in before the deadline, you're in until the end.

I really regret not trying SWG again earlier than a few months ago. This game really opened my eyes up to what is possible with player generated content. My main MMOs historically were EQ, COH, and WOW, so I never really had much experience with MMOs where, to any degree, the players' actions, not just the world, were persistent.
Fortunately, EQ II seems to have a lot of that same spirit. At least with housing. I think they are also working on a player created dungeon system, but I'm not sure.
Hopefully, I will see an aspect of this genre move closer to being AD&D or Hackmaster in 3-D.

Wow, hat's off to SOE. That sure is a cool idea. ^^
After all the let downs from SWTOR, it just makes me even more sad now that SWG closes. :(

I think it would be cool if they finished the game like the finished the original trilogy: an all-out humongous space battle around a nearly completed Death Star while a massive land war wages below on Endor. Winner take all!

I recently re-subbed for the sunset - SWG is a beautiful, beautiful game. There's absolutely nothing else like it, and I'll be very sad to see it go.
I'd love to see more former players return for the final months. If you're subbed and active by Sept. 15, you're in until the end in December - a small price to pay for such a monumental and (thus far) well-executed event.
I'm on Starsider, Kel'nara Starlighter, usually around Mos Eisley :)

I would love for the Empire to win just to spite the ending the movies had. It would defy all expectations.
