It's PAX week, and that means there are plenty of new game trailers to show off. In this week's Not So Massively, we check out the latest Firefall and Blacklight: Retribution trailers and hear about Bloodline Champions' impending release in Russia. Riot Games revealed new details on its upcoming Dominion game mode this week and announced that over 2.4 million League of Legends fans tuned in to last week's Gamescom livestream to check out the tournament and Dominion preview. League of Legends released its new melee assassin champion Talon this week, while Heroes of Newerth finally released Geomancer, the winner of last year's intelligence hero design contest.
Skip past the cut for details of this week's biggest news from the world of MOBAs and other online games that aren't quite MMOs.
Firefall is preparing for its scheduled December release, with a private beta underway and a public stage hopefully on the way. Developer Red 5 Studios was at PAX this week to show off its new trailer for the game. The short video expands on the storyline behind the game and shows off some of the epic combat scenes we can expect to take part in. If you're interested in Firefall, check out the trailer below and head over to the official Firefall website to register your interest in the upcoming beta.
Stunlock Studios announced the first ever Bloodline Champions replay contest, asking players to submit a replay of a particularly awesome moment they had in-game. The players who submit the top three replays will win blood coins and special edition contest avatars.
The big news for Bloodline Champions this week is that the game will soon be published in Russia. Global publisher Funcom reached an agreement with Russian firm Innova Systems to fully localise the game client and manage the game in Russia and all Russian-speaking territories.
Blacklight: Retribution, the upcoming MMO-esque sequel to first-person shooter Blacklight: Tango Down. The game's impressive pre-PAX trailer showed off its shiny graphics and highlighted the awesome mech suits that drop in during a match. Developer Zombie released the full version of the trailer to fans this week at PAX 2011. The new trailer demonstrates some of the weapons that will be available in the game and shows just how difficult it could be to kill the players piloting mechs. If you're interested in Blacklight: Retribution, check out the full PAX 2011 trailer embedded below.
Riot Games recently revealed that over 2.4 million people tuned in to watch the League of Legends tournament and Dominion preview livestreams at Gamescom in spite of the extremely popular DotA 2 livestream happening at the same time. With players looking forward to Dominion, developers have released further details on the new relic and shrine systems the new game mode will introduce.
Health relics will spawn throughout the map and can be picked up for an instant burst of health and mana, while shrines will provide a short buff to any player coming within range. Dominion innovates on the standard MOBA formula drastically, but so far changing the formula has been a successful strategy for Riot.
In a new champion spotlight, the Riot team introduced LoL's latest melee assassin Talon, the Blade's Shadow. Talon is designed to excel in 1v1 combat but has two area-effect abilities. He deals bonus damage to enemies who are stunned or slowed, combining well with his own area-effect slow and teammates with slowing abilities. Check out the champion spotlight video below for more information on Talon's abilities and to see him in action.
Heroes of Neweth beta, S2 Games ran a contest asking players to design their own new intelligence heroes for a chance to have their design make it into the game on release. Players Phopis and Chibbi won the contest with their extremely popular hero Geomancer, but when HoN released, the hero was nowhere to be seen. Fans of the winning submission will be happy to know that Geomancer has finally been added to the game.
Geomancer is a melee intelligence hero designed to chase down and gank other heroes with ease. Using his Dig ability, Geomancer can rapidly catch up to enemy heroes or escape from harm. The ability bypasses all terrain and movement impairing abilities, including area-effect slows. When he surfaces, Geomancer deals a stun and magic damage. His other abilities include an area-effect slow and a repeating nuke that enemies have to move quickly to avoid.
Like most new heroes, Geomancer has been released under the early access program, and so unfortunately players will have to either buy him or wait a few weeks for his public release. Check out the hero spotlight video embedded below to see how each of Geomancer's abilities works and how he plays in a game. The end of the video also hints at a possible upcoming nyan cat courier skin.
