For the record, b/c there seems to be a lot of confusion over this point, this was NOT the beta. This was an ARG to sign up for the beta.

In fact, the ARG may still be progressing as planned....it's a little unclear (especially given all the @thedarkplaces tweets) whether or not this is all a game within a game that Funcom had planned, or whether they're having actual technical difficulties.

Or both. They've taken advantage of technical difficulties and turned them into ARGs in the past.

Either way, the beta has not yet launched (so far as we know) and isn't supposed to launch for a while. This is just a fancy way of signing up for it. The game is still a minimum of 8 months from launch.

Yeah, there's definitely an arg /of some sort/ going on. They're even revealing info on the game, such as info on a 4th (most likely NPC) faction called the Phoenicians. But, like you say, it's difficult to say whether this is something they're making up on the fly or if this is what was planned all along.
