Characters always wind up acquiring old and beloved pieces of equipment, ranging from a valuable dropped weapon to just a particularly nicely itemized ring. But with time, equipment grows obsolete or just no longer serves your needs. Normally, that means a trip to the nearest vendor, but Final Fantasy XIV is introducing a new system that turns your old gear into boosts for your new gear. The Materia system is coming with patch 1.19, and a detailed preview has been added to the official site.
When the patch goes live, all equipment will have a "Spiritbond" value that rises from zero to 100% as you make use of the item. Once the value is at 100%, the item can be converted to materia that is subsequently attached to a new item, giving enhanced values to the new item. The system makes full use of combat, gathering, and crafting professions, and from the looks of the overview it will enable all three to make some significant gains in power.

Don't know what FF7 has to do with the FF14 universe, but still cool nonetheless. :) I really really need to get FF14.

"How do we get more people to play FF14?"
"Add FF7 references. Like Materia!"

"It's working!"

"Uh-oh! A strange portal has appeared over Eorzea, depositing a group of heroes from another world in our fair land. Speak to their leader, Cloud Strife, for access to brand new quests. Keep an eye out for strange red vortexes opening at random across Eorzea, as well, for they will summon forth Sephiroth clones that your guild can raid. Warning, battles against Clone Sephiroths can take up to twenty hours. Take breaks every two hours of play."

While I liked how customisable the materia system was, this one is just around granting stat boosts (instead of skills) which is not particularly interesting.

@Protoavis
The lower level gear/weapons may only give stat+ but what is stopping them from adding an ability?
I could definitely see them releasing "relic" type weapons that have abilities built in that require old (but still GOOD) weapons to be aged and transformed into materia to activate.
Example: "Super Sword" is released, you get it, it's got great stats and an ability called "Knights of the Round" for example, in order to unlock that ability you have to have "Good Sword" aged and transformed into the right materia. You might even need multiple materia to activate the ability on a certain weapon.
That would be pretty cool.

This sounds like grind at first, but reading into it more makes me think it's all for the better. All the gear that's going to be destroyed by those who want the fully-socketed gear is only going to fuel crafters.

The Materia system seems nice for old gear rather than just vendoring it when I am finished levelling with it.

This pique my interest, but I'm still not gonna play it again. I'm very tempted though.

If only they had some way to "upgrade" the community on that game. That is my biggest annoyance, more so than anything else in the game, and the main reason I play very sparingly. But other then that, this and some of the other planned changes they have in store look promising.

I know it's a FF7 word, but beyond that it doesn't seem as similar as I expected. I'm pretty sure they've used the word Espers in multiple games too, for example.

if there's any gear that's actually somewhat easy to acquire this system might even make some sense

This sounds like a nice change to FFXIV!
