nonsense. LFG tool works fine. If you're not a tank, prepare to wait awhile.

Good write up, but one correction. There's five roles, so you can have five unique builds at once. :)

Colors for roles isn't really true anymore. Each calling has a color in the raid frame, Red/Orange are Warriors, Green are Clerics, Yellow are Rogues, and Purple are Mages. But there are role icons: + for healer, shield for tanks, sword for DPS and flag for support.

@watchawatch and by "a while" I assume you mean about 5-10 min? DPS queues are super short compared to other games.

@Ren54 cleric tanking and mage healing? how does that work?

is a cleric as good for tanking as a warrior? and a mage as good at healing as a cleric?

With gear and a non-nub player, yes.
Are you going to have the absolute best numbers for those who worry more about the size of their epeen than having fun? no.
Are they close enough for 5-mans? yes.

My wife and I decided to make use of the free trial for Rift. Since jumping out of a game we have been part of for years we have been floating around a bit looking for a game to call home. Well we think we have found it :)

I must say we are pleasantly surprised by the game overall and very surprised that a developer seems to have listened to the players! The mechanics, the graphics, the story, even the music are very well done from what we have seen so far. I know this is highly subjective on my part but after years of playing games we keep finding things like UI features in Rift that make the game so user friendly....well let me just say the "team was focused" when they put this game together. So we decided to plunge in, purchase the game and give it a shot after only two days of being on the trial.

Welp we will be reading up on previous posts to get some background and hopefully help us fit into the community..so thanks for the articles. Other than that? /facepalm Where has the time gone! and why are my chores not done!! hehe this could turn out to be a bad decision on my part =P...in the short run at least :)

@Crovak

That's great to hear Crovak! I left WoW to try Rift and I like it a lot more. The developers listen to the customers more than Blizzard did and they release content a lot quicker. If you and your wife are looking for a peaceful server, come to Byriel Defiant side:) Good luck!

"Don't mention WoW
That goes without saying. You've been warned."

Lol'd.. sooo true.

Pitchforks and angry little peasant folk come out chasin' you. Somehow they will mistakenly take your keen eye of the many similarities with WoW and RIFT as a troll comment and try to burn you alive.

@fallwind :

if I understood you right a warrior tank and a cleric healer are better than cleric tank and mage healer, but they are good enough for 5 mans; doesn't that makes content trivial if you have a "real" tank and healer? and are 5 mans still doable if the cleric tank is just gearing up? are they close enough to raid?

I don't care about epen and would disregard numbers unless they say the raid doesn't have the throughput (healing or dps) to down a new boss, or if they say the tank is made of paper.

@(Unverified) Warriors can do: Tanking, DPS, Support (in that order, and support is sort of a semi-role)
Clerics can do: Healing, Tanking, DPS, Support (semi-role)
Rogues can do: DPS, Support, Healing (Bard)
Mages can do: DPS, Support (Archon), Healing (Chloromancer)

However if you're speaking generally, warriors *TANK* and DPS, clerics can do all sorts of roles but tend to *HEAL* or tank, rogues *DPS* but can tank a little and heal/support, and mages *DPS* but can support and heal.

@(Unverified) Any good big raid will have a mage Chloromancer, or a cleric tank, etc - its just that their needs is far less (so just one of them each in a 20-man), but that they do give some worthwhile help to a raid.

One example is the Mage Archon, which tends to buff you (just you) up, while weakening the enemy. It's like a warlock (along with dots) but more about the idea of 'stealing strength' from another. In a 5-man, this isn't really needed since you kill enemies so fast, but in a raid, 1-2 archons are really nice to have since they allow the party to deal a degree of more damage. :) You're not pure DPSing (as the idea of mage tends to go), but you're still doing good in another role.

Just a note on the quest items. Since 1.4, quest items are going into the quest bag - which is hidden under the quest log (default key: L)

They still show up in the quick quest bar but I've noticed people looking for specific quest items like reputation items.

Okay I'm actually raiding and know a bit about the game and roles, so let's clear some things up.

First at lower levels Chloro is not great at healing, but at 50 they can main heal any 5 man dungeon and offer just as much help in Raid situations. They are absolutely valuable.

The warrior thing is absolutely wrong too. The warrior is a great tank. The warrior is a great DPS (some of the best DPS in the game.) The warrior is good with support. There is no descending order with them. They do all three of these things well. The point in the game is you have the option to switch between duties if you so wish, during a dungeon. Also, true that the warrior can not heal.

Clerics are great tanks. Clerics are great healers (obviously.) Clerics are okay/good on DPS depending on gear/rotation/souls, etc. Clerics don't really have support roles - unless you're talking about debuffs/purges and such.

Rogues can TANK great. Rogues can DPS great - (FOTM DPS is the Sabdancer.) Rogues can support great. The Rogues don't have a straight up healing class. It is possible for a Rogue to solo heal as a bard in a dungeon that he is over-geared for (eth trinket a must) and the tank is over-geared also.

Mage can DPS great. Mage can heal great (as discussed before.) Mage can support great. Mage can not tank.
