Fighting and friendships are nice, but not directly relevant to the concept of a memorable game world.

As quite a few people have said, Age of Conan's Hyboria is exceptionally memorable and well done. It is - its easily the most high fidelity gaming world I've experienced to date.

Final Fantasy XI still wins for me, although its bit dated. FFXI's story and lore content is without equal.

Put it this way - when you look up in the night sky in FFXI, there are constellations, and specific stars that represent gods. Is there any other MMO out there that does this?

@Chiren

LOTRO I am pretty sure has the constellations Tolkien referred to as named by the Elves
I've played pretty much all the top shelf MMOs and the best looking environments would be 1) AoC and 2) LOTRO. But once you leave Tortage, AoC starts to fall downhill a bit.

Given that AoC is nowhere as big or as detailed as Lotro's game world I give the crown to LOTRO for best environment overall.

LotRO's night sky is, at least in part, a re-creation of the night sky Tolkien would have seen from his part of England.

My only critisim of Lotr night scape is the constant fullmoon? Give it a break lol... I recently was taken back when entering Evendim, a perfect movie style moment.

AoC something about being high up in Conall's Valley, looking down into the valley. Some zones really needed attention. Felt too zoned for my liking.

Eve, just flying around or exploring Asteroids, and the ships! Very expansive.

Spellborn, the odd art direction and detail made exploring so much fun. Green district and more, gee I miss this game especially the combat!

Of what I've experienced I'd vote for World of Warcraft's Azeroth. There are many locales with varying environments and some nice vantage points for scenic screenshots. It's just a fun world to explore and the lore helps make it more immersive.

EQ2 Norrath is beautiful (and accompanied by excellent atmospheric music).

Sony definitely gave EQ2 a 5-star musical score with real orchestra. They specifically invested more than usual in that part of the game, and I do think it paid off.

LOTRO's scores are so hilariously close to Howard Shore's "Lord of the RIngs" movie themes that I sometimes wonder if he's considered suing them. Especially areas like Rivendell and the Shire, they darn near copied the movie themes. And they also used a real orchestra. The music in LOTRO is really quite good too.

@Ardra Diva I'm not sure how you got that impression. Just because both scores are played by orchestras doesn't make them similar. They're not alike at all, apart from the fact both perfectly set the mood for the areas.

Listen again to the score when you arrive in Rivendell, and then compare it to the 'dream sequence' music when Frodo meets his friends again in Fellowship of the Ring in Rivendell after Elrond has healed him... very similar themes.

And the main theme on launch page is remarkably similar to the main theme of the movies.

I'm really not hearing it. Yes, they're similar in style, but that makes sense, considering the area. It just begs for swelling string music.

You mentioned the Shire:

Again, similar in theme and approach, but certainly not in melody.

(And it's doubtful anyone will get sued to begin with, since both movies and game are firmly in the claws of Warner Brothers.)

can't beat MIDDLE EARTH!

And Turbine has so lovingly created it in LOTRO.

Spectacular game environment!

Hyboria. It's gorgeous. I remember standing at one end of the valley in Cimmeria, looking lengthwise down it's expanse, and thinking, "This is amazing!"

I like LotRO's version of Middle Earth as well, but it doesn't quite match the scenic grandeur (though it should) that Funcom was able to create in AoC.

Everything else pales in comparison.
