Star Wars Galaxies may be due for a tragic space opera death come December, but that doesn't mean the devs are twiddling their thumbs in the meantime. This morning, Sony Online Entertainment's sci-fi sandbox received a major faction and space update, making the ongoing Galactic Civil War content truly interplanetary. According to the patch notes, players can now "participate in dynamic space battles and fight alongside or against Ace pilots including Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett" above iconic planets like Tatooine, Corellia, Naboo, Lok and Dantooine. The patch offers new duty missions for player Pilots as well as awards for participation in the new content, and recurring station events ensure that players can always find some action in the cold black of space.
Medics and Smugglers also received profession tweaks to bring them into balance with the other classes, and Shipwrights will be happy to learn that the update's new starships are in fact player-craftable.

Most. Pointless. Update. Ever.

@Alarie Because it's just pissing on the current subscribers. "Oh, hey, here's this new addition to the game that may just reignite your love of this game, so that when we go offline, you'll be even more heartbroken. Enjoy!"
It just seems like a waste of development time and money to work on this when there's no doubt about the game shutting down in December.

Considering the size of this update they've probably been working on it for a while. And there is no reason to suggest devs knew the game was going to get canceled. I know someone who was working on a now canceled game. He walked in to work one day and they said the game is canceled you can go home.
It wouldn't be a surprise if many of the people working on this didn't find out until we did, if that's the case they may as well finish the work they started.

A few months ago, this would have thrilled me. Now? What's the point?
Thanks, LucasArts.

This depressed people who saw this at fanfaire. They said it was the best update they have seen in any MMO in a long time. And this is only part of what SOE wanted to do.
Sad what Lucas Arts is doing to this game. I can see NGE coming to TOR a year or two down the road when the game doesn't have a million subs.

@(Unverified) It was a Lucas Arts employee complaining that SWG was too slow and had too much reading. If TOR doesnt pull its weight, change will come

Read up on your history. TOR IS the NGE. Which is fine, because TOR was built with the NGE ("Heroic" experience) in mind. SWG wasn't. And when LucasArts made the transition to all their games being "Heroic" and "Iconic" they told SOE to change everything too.
Go look at what devs said when they announced the NGE they called every other thing heroic and iconic. Watch a dev video for TOR, count how many times they say heroic or iconic. TOR is lucky because it is being made after LA changed their game philosophy.
LA said people don't want to be moisture farmers.. thing is, they do.

@Interitus Then why didn't more subscribe to the game if there was a burning desire to be moisture farmers? The fact is the game was on life support. 99% of the people sad about this had already quit long ago.
Notice how almost every "Oh I'm so sad about this shutting down, damn you LA/Bioware!" is always followed by "but yeah I cancelled years ago".

I'd love to know where you got your numbers. SWG didn't have 10 of millions of players but it was doing good enough. Last average I saw was 250k range (pre-CU). That's a decent sized population. It suffered from the combat upgrade and went on life support after the NGE.

...........Why? If I were on the dev team and I heard it was shutting down I would've been like "Alright! Done! No more work for me!"

@TheMustacheHero in these cases you get a bonus for sticking around. I once had double salary for staying till the doors closed to finish a transition.

And that... is why you're not in our Industry.
We make these games because we are as passionate about playing as we are about creating them.
Imagine knowing that you will be moving on to a diff project in a few months, and one of the pieces of work you've poured your heart and soul into is disappearing for good. Would you rather send it off with a bang, or let it waste away like trash?
These guys are making their last hoorah as the SWG Dev team, my hats off to them. They make me proud to be a part of this Industry.

personally, I'd ram this sinking ship into an iceberg, titanic style, and leak the shit out of it's source code.

I've heard this before, but thanks for repeating it, Unverified.
It's just one last dip in this pool and we are hopefully "going for broke"!

And this highlights one of the reasons I never played SWG, but will probably play SWTOR. The reason is I don't like stomping around in a story that has been told already. WHY is Darth Vader wanting to fly with ME? Why is Luke? Didn't they have more important things to do? Stomping around in lore is a turn off for me. Unless it is in the past or in the future relative to the iconic story already told.
