This sounds like a good change.

Is there anything in this game that they don't need to fix?

Anyway, I am in the market for a new MMO, and this one has caught my eye. I think it is understandable that I am hesitant to buy.

Thoughts?

@QSpec Well I played the game on and off since launch and have seen it slowly evolve as Yoshi took over. However if anything, I'd advise you to wait until the end of Sept when this patch, 1.19 releases before hopping into it. Meanwhile, I'm in the same boat as you peeping around other games for a new mmo to call home.

Don't. I'm not a generally depressing person, but just don't. I bought it at launch, and stopped trying to have fun after about a week. About a month ago I reinstalled it because I was bored and it's still got no monthly subscription (at least it did, that could have changed by now) and I uninstalled within 15 minutes.

Really, don't waste your money.

FFXIV currently on the brink of HUGE game changes. The devs have been very busy with prep work and it's about to come to fruition.

Patch 1.19 which is due at the end of september is proving to be a large patch, with many changes.
Crafting streamlining
Mount system (basic)
battle revisions (advanced)
materia crafting/slot system
Ifrit battle (lv 30 and 50)
just to name a few.

There are two more in being worked on 1.20 (fall)
which will add the "Job" system which is looking to have your chosen class advance or specialize in a certain aspect. i.e. Gladiator can specialize and become a "Paladin" A lancer will become a "Dragoon Knight" The plan is to be able to specialize on an as needed basis, more for end game type situations. So you can play with your custom ability sets which you can heavily borrow from other classes to "make your own job" or specialize and play with a reduced but focused and enhanced skill set, otherwise unavailable.
patch 1.21 (winter)
there hasn't been too much info but is supposed to be a major patch.

If you're looking to play, I hear you can find the game on the cheap $10-30 at some places, at the moment there isn't a sub fee. But I agree with a lot of people, wait for 1.19 to land (end of Sept) it'll provide easier travel options and more refined content. If you think you can stomach a game that is currently going through major overhauls and basically be part of a beta test join up now, but go in knowing things are changing.

I have a feeling A lot of people who post largely negative things here about FFXIV played during launch and were let down and haven't returned or followed with current changes. Those players who have returned log in and see the UI hasn't changed greatly or only spend 15 min like the above poster, and immediately log out.

I played FFXIV from Alpha 1 to launch and took a break because I was so frustrated with the game, I tried to stick around, but just couldn't.
Now, 1.18 was a huge change to FFXIV and it was merely addition of auto attack changes to guildleves (daily quests) and implementation of grand company quests. I'm having a much better time in FFXIV than ever. I kinda worry that it's on the verge of such large changes that I'll be spending massive amounts of time in game instead of the couple hours each day or so.

@QSpec if you can live with 'playing' a game that even after those significant upgrades appears primarily designed for PS3/joypad with a horrible graphics engine for PC and no real goals in the game or sense and reason for the few things you are doing in a frighteningly dead world, sure give it a try. The game should reach beta status some time next year.

I personally don't think that there was much things to be fixed in the game at launch. I believe that there is a problem with the people who now play the game or the community at whole. XIV forced people to chat with one another in order to get things done. Out of my group of friends who play the game we had no troubles getting what we wanted. But when we solo'd it was pretty rough.

I think people expected the game to be XI but shiny, but didn't get that. So now they're trying to slowly make it into XI-2.

Horrible graphics engine??? O-o I don't know what quality you play on.. Sure isn't the quality that I do than.. I wouldn't go and call it horrible graphics engine as I would not as optimized tbh. But i wouldn't call it horrible.

The game is a major improvement from beta. I've been following this game from Closed Beta to now and I must say it's came ALONG way and it's all for the better. One hell of a game if you let yourself get into it.

Haha well if you have any question on F2P titles, I may have the answer. I have tried dozens in the last few months.

Throw a couple titles my way that you liked. I might have already tried them but there are always some that I might have overlooked.

Zentia is charming, but I am doubting its longevity. I enjoy Wizard101 for its pick up and put down gameplay. I liked Allods but I have been tired of WoW for a while and it is a grindier WoW (to a point... but it is still worth a look).

What have you been trying?

Haha, I actually installed Zentia last night just from the generally good reception that it's been getting from people around this community.

From Nexon, I also tried Dragon Nest til recently, but got rather bored of it and got tired of the endless bots that they never seems to take care of.

Then there's Iris online that some of my friends want to play, but we're all a little reserved regarding its cash shop.

Very happy about this. I'd love to be able to craft worthwhile items without having to lvl up several crafting professions to do so.

it wasnt the crafting system that made me stop playing.it was the 4 second lag after every action.as well as running out of mp on a ep mob and dying.

too bad so sad, even free i dont like it .

11 was so tight i never blamed even one death on controls.i cannot say the same for 14.things would have started breaking if i played any longer.no rdm solo?no reason to stick around.

Now if only SWG had done something like that Q.Q

And is FFXI already fine in this aspect though? It was a challenge just to gather the needed mats and you even had to have like two or three professions to properly level ONE of them up!

Great dumbing down the crafting.... the only thing I liked about the game.

"The following is a recipe comparison of two armor pieces belonging to the same rank range.

Current Recipe (Hempen Doublet)
1 hempen doublet front
1 hempen doublet back
1 pair of sheepskin shoulder guards (taupe)
1 sheep leather strap (taupe)
1 pair of hempen sleeves
1 spindle of hempen yarn

New Recipe (Hempen Doublet Vest)
1 bolt of undyed hempen cloth
1 spindle of hempen yarn
1 circle of sheep leather
1 copper ingot"

That's their definition of streamlining? Also, you'll have to buy the copper ingot if you can't craft one, requiring two professions.
