Ya... still thinking about this - One of the iconic things I remember about Star Wars in general is the good guys talking with the bad guys as they fight... I mean, comon "Luke, I -AM- your father", bit of a downer, but from a gameplay standpoint, I just need to be able to /point and /laugh. Hopefully we can do that :)

Good. Because it will ALWAYS turn into a troll/rage fest. That's a guarantee.

Even RP servers wouldn't work with cross chat.

I have to agree, just imagine all the dumb text spam after being killed by an illiterate fool.

"Uz ded lootzor" or "Uz got pwnd"

Crap like that doesn't even fit into the Starwars universe, it's not even a part of the English language. Even emotes can be rude; In World of Warcraft you can spit on people. Hell there is even a "/rude" gesture you can emote. One can almost make the assumption that developers want drama in their games.

@Bladerunner83 Exactly. No matter what, it will break immersion even if that's what people want it for.

Emotes work fine for me.

Yeah, it would turn so very bad, so very quickly, any other way. It would make XBox Live look like a lecture by the Dalai Lama.

Bioware made the right choice here.

@Ren54 Well, you sir, are wrong. It exists in RIFT.

Also, being that this is a Star Wars game, I can only imagine how much worse it may get.

The problems in Rift are minimal sorry. This is just bullsh*t and goes against everything in the SW lore.
Imagine the film being like this: Luke couldn't speak with his father.

@Gaugamela LOL. Did you forget that this was a game? Did you forget that some games need standards?

When you get shot in the head in real life, do you die instantly? Yes.

The thing is that even if players aren't going to get raged out by the other team, they're still going to get raged at by their own group mates when things don't go well. I still do Random Arenas in Guild Wars pretty often, and more often than not it's someone in my own team complaining about how bad some other person in our team is than someone on the other team bad mouthing us.

The simple reality is that if you want to get into any type of PvP then you need to learn to develop a thick skin. Removing cross faction chat isn't going to save anyone from verbal abuse, and it removes the potential for good (like congratulating the other team on a close, well played match, which is also common) as much as any potential bad.

I don't see how it is a big deal, that is what /ignore is for. Seems like a big sacrifice for just a few nerd ragers.

Cross faction chat has been good in Rift.
You get the odd idiot but mostly it is fun.

the thing is, RIFT's Open PvP would be laugthable if it...existed. sadly it doesnt. so allowing communication is very minor there.

at first sight, this is the right decition IF there is some sort of currency/points to gain with PvP kills, and open world PvP is the place to get it.
nothing worse than a bunch of opposite faction players agreeing to trade kills and boost their reputation/honor/whatever-currency-name. thats plain exploiting, and anything to make that difficult is good in any PvPer's book...

considering BioWare is getting help from Mythic to make the PvP side of SWToR , we can suppose it may work similar to WAR.

and yup, in WAR this is a major concern.

for the RPers it sucks, absolutly agree with you in that. but this isnt the first time (nor will be the last) that RPers have to suffer for the sake of gameplay mechanics...

A bit of a blow, but I agree. Just leave these things /auto-off by default and let those who want it figure it out.

And really, while some responders have a point about your own team smack talking their teammates, the allure of smacktalking and the effect is much worse in cross-faction (Hell, even those who get ganked sending /tells to their PKer are annoying; they may be tears some of you can drink like fruit juice, but better to leave them off.

And besides, the response points out that LOCAL CHAT is untouched; you can still cross-faction chat with those in your immediate area. Really, that's enough of a boon to RPers and anyone else. Luke Skywalker didn't have Darth Vader on speed-dial or his comm-channel to constantly bicker/smacktalk each other, even if they were on the same planet mules apart.

Funny. In Guild Wars, we have free chat with the other team, and with everyone around us. At least they did back when I played. GG was a term if the day there. It meant good game. Back in the random arena, I'd sometime message others for their build. It's how I learned how to play my character better, and made friends. Sure, we got some screaming idiots, but when you play an Ice Elementalist, you tend to get noticed.

@Grumms This would make sense if faction-only chat in WoW wasn't practically the standard of vile and disgusting chat.

This changes nothing. People who would behave that way against the other faction will behave that way with their own.

That and it would be gold farmer bot spam Nirvana if chat was that open channeled.

I am glad they are keeping chat to just each side at least : )

see.. see.. you PVP'ers can't play well together!! This is why we can't have nice things!!!!

seriously though, mildly disappointing but hardly a surprise, I don't PVP anyway so it won't affect me at all.
