Delivering the final keynote address at this year's GDC Europe, Richard Garriott said that the industry is rapidly moving away from MMOs as we know them and toward mobile and social gaming -- and that companies need to hop on board, lest they be left behind.
Garriott used his iPhone as an example of this new direction: "I am now much more of a gamer than I ever been in my whole life, but the vast majority of the gaming I have played has been on this machine. I'm a devout believer that this is the current and near-term future of games."
He defines this "new era" of gaming by having cheap games that are simple to use and connect you with real-world friends. While he thinks earlier social games like FarmVille were too simple and unappealing, Garriott says that they're evolving quickly.
During the speech, Garriott expressed regret that his team didn't stick by the original vision for Tabula Rasa, and he urged fellow developers not to trade in their dreams in order to follow the company line. His new company Portalarium plans to "reinvent roleplaying yet again" by releasing a series of products that will capitalize on social gaming and retrain players to think beyond mere combat to a wider experience.

Shallow, repetitive gameplay done on a small screen using social pressure to force you to play.
To hell with that! I'll keep my desktop, thanks.

That is idiotic. Mobile games will grow as a segment, that doesn't mean it is the only medium in terms of gaming.
Also, last I checked there are more MMOs coming out today, than ever before.
Mobile/Social gaming has its place, but the rest of gaming is not going anywhere.

Given the age of his last successful contribution to genre that I'm aware of, I'm a bit hesitant to trust his judgement. Mobile and social platforms are *a* future for the games. The idea that everyone who enjoys video games is going to be content moving exclusively toward the Farmville/mobile sector is pretty dubious. Not until mobile devices offer the full range of variety, visuals and control a PC does, partner.
Similarly, a traditional MMO can easily gain traction in the social/mobile sector by providing strong integration, something both Rift and GW2 seem to have and WoW to a lesser extent with its apps.

I must be the dinosaur.
I don't play any of these. Too small, not enough content, and just don't measure up to the bigger games.
Playing games on my cellphone never appealed to me at all but maybe he's right and the newer generation loves it. /shrug

Mobile games are going to go the same way as PC and Console gaming are going . Each generation they are going to become more and more similar to the point where one will be interchangeable with the other.
All we are seeing from the initial social games is a bubble that has been generated by tapping a previously untapped market. They certainly are not a dead end but they are by no means the future.

Way to blame your team for your lack of management and guidance.

poor, poor Richard Garriot...his epic failure in the inudstry he once pioneered left him scarred for life...

Garriot navel-gazes far too much.
Developers, stop over-analyzing where and how we are going to play games and concentrate on giving us new and original game titles.

Seriously? What has this yahoo created in the last 10 years that succeeded?
I'm sure at one point Garriott was quite the visionary, but lets see how much work a ressurected Einstien gets done after being placed in my datacenter.
You've lost touch, mister Garriott.

No... go away Mr attention hog, your ideas are not fun.
Put your iphone and your browser games away and go make a proper Ultima sequel.
Don't come back until you're done and don't you dare go on another trip into space again, you can't hide from us there.

While I have a great deal of respect for "Lord British" and what he has contributed to the game industry, I feel he is doing a bit of a sales job there in promoting his new company. I dont think desktop MMOs are going anywhere but forward. Social media gaming is a niche.
