@Fabius Bile oh, sorry, was I supposed to wait till after you went in a rant about how normal business strategy (sales and promotion) is somehow akin to the guy in the sandwich board that says "THE END IS NEAR!" before I post?

I will remember for next time.

"The company recently announced that it's seen more than a million customers since launch. In this instance, "customers" are defined as those who have installed and played the game but have not necessarily subscribed."

It is not clearly stated if they also count inactive accounts and trials. If they count those as well, i must say that's rather shady of them.

@Floop the Squirrel

people also mistakenly think this means that RIFT has one million subscribers right now, lol. I've seen posts that were saying that and people thumbing their nose at WoW.

They could have 200k right now but no one knows what the actual number is. But one million doesn't mean they have that at the moment.

In fact, they closed off three more servers just this week.

I would assume they mean people who purchased the game client. I really hope they do anyways, I have some respect for Trion, and I would hate to see them do something low like that! D:

doubt they count the trials, but they definetly count those who subscribed for a while but then went inactive. then refuse to release actual subscribtion numers out of pure fear.

shady (on the edge of dishonesty) advertisement is Trion's trademark..

@real65rcncom I would prefer them have opened with too many servers to help alleviate queues and close some later when populations become more steady. The alternative was more queuing than we already had and even less players.

@real65rcncom I kinda wish more MMOs would release actual numbers. Gods knows that WoW's 11 mill is greatly exagerated (there have been what 6mill BC sales, less than 5 for Wrath (and most of those were recently in China).

11 mil, of which nearly half have never upgraded past vanilla? Something is fishy there too.

@real65rcncom Don't you mean those servers became trial servers? Because, you know, they're getting buttloads of trials. :p

Where are you getting this information? I frequent the Rift forums and have seen nothing concerning server closures. In fact I have seen nothing about mergers either...

Really curious to where you guys get this information.

Think "alternate advancement". Basically, from the little info we have, the attunement will be points you can spend after hitting 50, that will attune you to a certain plane, adding some bonuses like extra damage and such.

These points will be earned or bought for experience. - So that's why quests still offer xp even at 50.

Man, the super achiever awards really lowered the bar.

Six months is cause for celebration? Heck, even APB has a total of six months doesn't it?

It's an in-game event. People including myself enjoy them. Let's dump on the company because they give us more content. Really?

Trion continues to impress.

How is saying six months isn't anything special "dumping on the company"?

I'm saying this isn't anything most mmos don't reach or do. Nothing special that's all.

So what? They want to add a little something and have a little fun with the weekend. I don't really see any problems.

more than a count forward they should make the count backwards...it isnt like RIFT's days arent numbered anyway...

it has benefitted from this dry season for way too long...well, thats nearly over, once SWToR GW2 and the rest of upcoming titles are out, its freemium or close for RIFT....

Its embarrasing that you consider that as RIFT oneupping SWToR in something...I suppose when you are so overwhelmed by the opposition, every lil, meager and unimportant win counts...for something... somehow...or not

but who the hell cares anyway, RIFT is dead man walking and we both know it...you and me can keep on arguing here on massively till judgement day, upvoting/downvoting posts...and that wont change the fact that RIFT's path lies clearly in front of it, and it leads to the MMO graveyard.

its obvious you enjoy RIFT. good for you. if I were you I'd spend my time playing it instead of figthing an uphill battle in a message board, no matter how hard you try RIFT is well past the no return point... use the time you have left playing it, I know I did with Auto Assault and I dont regret it...

Well, if you don't like this game then why do you insist on posting in articles about the game, always crying about how it's going to die soon?

I lack the required info to project that results onto the new products. I dont know enough about SWToR or GW2 to know if they will compete with each other or can peacefully coexist, or if they can clearly differenciate between each others (and the rest of the market) to be able to carve a niche of their own.

that however doesnt mean we cannot predict RIFTs

RIFT is a filler title, far too many people admitted so during the release in the forums to ignore that..and way too many people are saying exactly the same right now in the forums, that once "X" releases they are out.

now, lets forget about this for a second

the FACT is that RIFT has been trapped in a neverending doward spiral ever since release...and there wasnt any game looming on the horizon back then.

so in that sense, my theory is that :

- a filler game (labelled as such by a lot of its current active playerbase)

- which is essentially more of the same, cannot clearly differenciate itself from the rest of the market, has endured the critic of being a "clone" ever since its birth...

- and which has been bleeding population nonstop even when NO competition was present, unable to stabilize their own playerbase...

will lose a hell lot more when the mentioned competition appears...
