on the bright side of things, WAR40K is just a year away or so...

why waste time with bad copies when you can play the original...

The same reason I "waste" time on the Warcraft MMO rather than Warhammer MMO...

Ironically, the WH40K MMO was reported to be pretty much WoW with guns and space marines.

So, yeah, "bad copies" and all.

I don't think we are going to see War40k until 2013.

looks like some people here should read this:

http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/08/users-treat-criticism-of-favorite-brands-as-threat-to-self-image.ars

its ok guys, just because your favorite developer is a shameful plagiarist without an atom of integrity doesnt mean you have to cut yerself...

You know, all that link proved is:

a) You didn't actually read any of our responses.

actually YOUR post is the proof to the link, specially the part where you go personal about a..tsk stk, not classy, not classy...

Im sure the author is happy that people like you exists...

anyway this "bar discussion" isnt changing the fact that Blizzard's only original IP is Diablo, which is the mother of all generic-ness and shallow-ness... I dont know where the tens of millions in profit are going...surely not to the "originality department"....

than what? since there is no WAR40k MMO yet and no SC MMO ever, thats a bit premature to say, dont you think?

or you mean WAR vs wow? in that case, indeed.

looks like when you dont waste a red cent in thinking something yourself and instead plaguiarize someone else's work from the A to the Z, you can use all that saved money to hire quality game developers and make a good product...

that doesnt make you any less despicable, tho =P

So you don't know that Warcraft's entire lore is pretty much a copy of Warhammer's because Blizzard was originally developing Warcraft 1 for Games Workshop as a Warhammer game, and then Games Workshop was unimpressed with their work so they pulled the franchise and Blizzard had to make up lore quickly on the spot and release the game for lack of funding, leaving a game with lore and a setting that very closely resembled Warhammer's?

Bad copies and all... Indeed.

Yes I did know that.

I was referring to the game, not the lore. You'll not that I mentioned the WH40K MMO specifically. Sort of, as it were, an ironic point that the game looks to be the opposite of the lore situation.

I guess you might have missed that bit.

it isnt THAT ironic, to be honest.

the MMO industry has shown time after time that EverQuest's (read: not WoW's) layout is a staple of the themepark genre.

There arent many ways you can deviate from the common ground, UI, the world layout, progression...its basically a "10 steps" book that you should follow unless you wanto to waste millions.

then you can spice things up with your own formula, like squad-oriented action or sorta-FPS combat, which WAR40K will have.

lore is an entirely different thing, in a genre as vastly open as the literature, you are completly free to use anything you can imagine, the possibilities are practically infinite.

there is absolutly no reason or excuse for being as similar to something as SC is to the 40K universe...it HAS to be deliberate and in bad faith...

If you look around enough, you find similarities in everything to be honest. Generally the only people who think that Starcraft is a rip from Warhammer 40k are those who are such fans that they see 40k in everything.

There's not that many similarities between the two anyway. The main similarity is big guys running around in power armour, and that's not exactly unique to 40k (Halo made an entire franchise out of it as well). Other than that, there's not a whole lot.

@Greyhame Space Marines are certainly not the only thing that they have in common.

(unrelated to you, Greyhame:) That said, both sides are obviously very passionate about the franchise that they prefer, so I'd say that all of this bickering is pretty senseless. The Warhammer (and WH40K) universes have certainly been around for much longer than Starcraft, and there are a lot of lore similarities, but people taking the shit personally on both sides is just ridiculous.

Blizzard fans: Blizzard has obviously been heavily influenced by Games Workshop's franchises; you're kidding yourselves if you think otherwise.

40K fans: Stop warmongering. You should all know that these kinds of discussions just end up being arguments. The massive number of downvoted people in this thread is proof of that.

TLDR; we should all just get along. Blizzard makes good games, and the 40K MMO looks sick as well. There's no need for everyone to be so uptight.

Generally as a fan of both, I don't really see it. So when people say similarities exist, it's generally the same kind of similarities between Warcraft and Lord of the Rings or D&D. In my experience. :)

But I do honestly have no desire to really argue it out that much.

BOTH franchises and all current fantasy MMO's ALL plagiarise in some form of another from Tolkien and C. S. Lewis.

World of warcraft is doing better because it is a better game. Starcraft was a brilliant game. Warhammer 40k has had some decent games, nothing amazing.

All three of Blizzards IP's(Diablo, SC, WC). Have so far been iconic in some way or another(SC set the standard for RTS games, Diablo the same with RPG's. WOW, well. Look at how well it's doing). Warhammer is a boardgame with a few decent games.
