1) Lets not crown TOR before it is released. It has some features which may not go well with the MMO elite. Plus its Biowares first MMO. So lets see what happens when a couple hundred thousand start banging away at the game.

2) GW2 will be F2P with microtransactions. It will be competing with Champions Online, not Rifts.

GW2 is B2P technically.

And no, it will be competing with WoW, RIFT, and SWTOR. Just because it doesn't have a sub fee doesn't mean its not a AAA title.

THe competition in the MMO space is getting better with each passing year. I love Rift as the underdog though; in a year that was scheduled to have: WoW's Cataclysm, TERA, GW2, and SW:TOR, Rift was an afterthought and an unknown.

Now they've launched a game with more content updates than Blizzard has managed. SW:TOR and GW2 are pushed back, and TERA is a flop in its home market (and now pushed back here too).

SW:TOR very well might be the gaming industry's water world -- or it could be the next heir apparent to WoW. No one knows how this is going to do. GuildWars 2 is probably a mid-2012 title.

Rift's aggressive marketing and discoutned subscription model is taking advantage of its window of opportunity -- they're getting as many people top lay the game as possible. Imagine how many people will come back if they try SW:TOR and find it lacking. Rift could theoretically take off like WoW did...wow was a 1million copy game until patch 1.5 or 1.6, then started doubling its audience every 6 months. Rift might pull this off as well.

@Ren54 : I'll reserve judgment on single/dual player instances until I see how they work, there will provably be a lot of QQ due to balance issues, gear you get there etc.

there is diferent damage for pvp/pve, but is it balanced in either?

a new warfront will be good.

the patch speed is meh, they are small patches. (for all they say about patch speed rift only has one more boss than wow and wow added a new daily area so they are kind of even on that point)

I like the model where you can do the raid with 10/25 people better, if you preffer it separate that's your opinion and that's ok.

I do want an appearance tab or a way to modify how item look.

All of which, I'm sure, comes as no surprise considering it's RIFT.

indeed. But they are always a good laugthing stock.

I cant wait for the next news of more server merges/shutdowns, followed by another clueless PR guy saying RIFT now has 5 million subs...

its appaling to see Trion staffers talking about the MMO market as if they knew anything about it...one would think they should better devote their time to save their sinking ship...

ah wait, they dont need to save it, they just have to keep throwing random false numbers without ever providing any factual data to back them up, hence noone can disprove them...

really? your only argument to my post was "nya nya nya you support SWToR"?
let me torpedo your whole apologetic argument with 2 simple words: I dont.
SWToR leaves me cold, I havent preordered, Im still on the fence deciding if I'll play it, and if I finally end up getting it, it will be to check whats all the fuss about.
I do not defend it in any way or shape the same you seem to do with RIFT.

anyway you are talking 2 entirely different things here. SWToR might or might not break 3m preorders, thats the FUTURE.

the PRESENT here is a Trion guy saying they have 1m subs, when everyone with an IQ above single digits would find hard to believe they have anything over 500k, looking at pure facts.

the former may be wishful thinking. or may not, it remains to be seen

the later is pure, outright LYING and DECEIVING. Im speechcless, I cant believe people let Trion get away with that shit.

Lately Trion seem to be falling more and more in F2P publisher shenanigans, like those announcing "60 million players worldwide", or "most successful game in asia"....claiming outrageous shit then declining to prove it. Their dishonesty appalls me.

seems high? only seems?

RIFT had 700k subscribers at release. since then they have been merging/closing servers left and right.

theres no way in hell they have GAINED 300k players considering their record.

as I said, thats purely PR.

if some news site had the guts to ask him for hard data to prove his statement that guy would vanish in thin air, or stutter a reply akin to "well, maybe you missunderstood what I said..."

as it is now, that statement is similar to "I have a green dog that can sing. No, I cant show you it. you will have to believe me"

Your FUD is tiresome. They have NOT been closing servers left and right; they added 20-30 servers at launch due to unexpected demand. In the meantime, they've upped the server carrying capabilities as well from the beta.

Now the additional launch servers are designated as trial shards.

No shards have been closed.

They have adjusted capacity of shards, and designation of shards, ONCE since launch.

Most shards are now listed as medium or high population in prime time.

The community is doing fine. The dreaded 1st, 3rd, and 6th month dropoffs in population have not occured as they did in WAR, AoC, or Aion.

Sorry to disappoint you, this MMO is doing well.

So looking at the server stats page...the average population for most realms seems to be medium (1.6-2.4). That is PHENOMENAL given the metrics and calculations used... this site apparently polls every 5 mins, 7/24. So the realms are averaging a medium population even factoring in all the server low periods such as 1am-8am, and maintenance...there's no weighted average,.

Even warcraft realms only calculates faction history based on peak usage periods.

Based on what i'm reading, there's more activity on an average Rift shard than a high population realm in WoW. That's fantastic! Even better than i expected, although not surprising if you play the game.

Ya, at what point did "1 million in sales" equal "1 million customers".

You've had 1 million customers at different times, you do not HAVE 1 million customers.

The stretching the wording to always use the biggest number is getting so old in the video game market. Give me a company that comes out and admits how many subscribers and how much money they are actually making and I will give them some money simply for being honest.

As for the actual topic of the article, I don't think Mr. Reid stated anything that wasn't already pretty obvious in the modern MMO gaming space.

As for many of these comments -- it's annoying to read through and see how many readers that have NOTHING to do with the gaming industry start quoting made up numbers, unverifiable websites and offer up speculated opinion as fact.

I think he's setting his RIFT customers up for the eventual cash shop that they are putting in which is smart.

Better to soften the blow now by giving the "the times they are a' changing" speech because they will be hella mad when it lands in the game.

RIFT has always been a filler title that not even those playing it give a damn about. When the new wave of games come out, its F2P or bust for Trion.

What is funny is that RIFT got released in the middle of an astonishingly long dry season.
no decent games in 2009, no decent games in 2010, no decent games till at least end of 2011/ beginning of 2012.

and still they failed to bank on that.

thats what happens when you overpromise, then release a game that is basically WoW lite minus the fun....

@Ren54 Dangit Ren.. you missed it. I thought you were a sharper knife in the drawer than that. :(

Everything they've done up until now is exactly why they are doing cash shop in the future.

Free unlimited transfers? Other games you pay. Lost revenue.

Crazy pricing schemes where they make as little as $8/mo on a sub? Lost revenue.

Over 40 servers sitting on the wayside that can't accept any new players due to 'trial status'? Lost revenue (just from operation)

New game coming out with no subscription fee and a cash shop in a genre (RTS) that cash shops fail in? Lost revenue.

All the signs are there. The moons just have to drop in alignment. Those moons are:

SWTOR. GW2. TSW. ArcheAge. Firefall.

I have been playing on Belmont since launch, i am in a large guild... since launch I have only known 3 people to quit, and everyday the starting zones are packed....

Please stop trying spread disinformation.

Rift is good, but I'm not a fanatic, I know that this game isn't perfect and I see examples everyday, but I know from experience not hearsay, that they are not "bleeding" players.

"In preparation for Rift, the Trion team looked at huge past MMOs such as Ultima Online, EverQuest and World of Warcraft and noted that simply making another like these "wouldn't be enough." "

I'm sorry, but:
bwaaaahahahahahahahaha...

That's shameless, pathetic hypocrisy right there...

(This comes from an avid Rift player, btw. I'm just not blind to the fact that post-beta Rift is nothing but a bad clone.. That's really what the majority of the WoW kiddies were asking for, that's what the devs gave them)
