I would say the way RIFT is working with it's 4 classes with many roles idea is a good one. Instead of needing to level a dozen different characters to do different things, you really can get by with 1 or 2 and then just tweak the heck out of your roles. Very nice aspect of the game, imo.

It depends on the game. If it's a game where you don't have to pick a class (Runescape, Mabinogi, Eden Eternal.. to work my way up the list..) I'll usually pick a role to focus on, but also dabble in all the other roles as well since I don't have to go through the trouble of creating a new character to do so.

In most traditional class-based games however, I like to pick one class (usually ranged DPS or ranged support, with decent soloing ability) and learn to play that class really, really well. I would rather be known as a very skilled X class than a mediocre X, Y, and Z.
