The first thing I thought of was Second Life. Beyond that, not being familiar with the books, I have absolutely no idea WTF was going on...

It does look like a cross between Second Life and an MMO game. Elements of both. Beyond that, it's hard to say.

As for the books, the basic concept was that there were these uber-rich and powerful people in what was called the Grail Brotherhood who created an incredibly realistic virtual reality network called Otherland. So realistic, in fact, that it couldn't be distinguished from reality. Their intent was to eventually move their consciousness into these realities that they'd crafted for themselves, becoming immortal.

However, computers weren't capable of supplying the level of detail necessary to make Otherland work. They lacked imagination. So the Grail Brotherhood hit upon a method of using the consciousness of other people (specifically kids) to provide the "fuel" for Otherland. In short, they were buying immortality for themselves at the price of everyone else.
