So what is art direction and why is it important to video games in general and MMORPGs in particular? That's a good question, and sadly one that can't be answered in a brief news post. What we can do, though, is point you to some worthwhile reading on the subject. Today's lesson comes courtesy of Undead Labs and Doug Williams.
Williams serves as the art director on the firm's upcoming zombie apocalype Xbox Live Arcade MMO (currently codenamed Class3), and while you might expect him to spend time talking about gory effects or the best way to render blood and brains in a dark environment, Williams actually spends a good portion of the latest Undead Labs blog post talking about something called "Faded Americana."
"Faded Americana really resonates with me because there are many analogies between the style and a zombie apocalypse. In both cases, you see society hanging onto the ghosts of its past," Williams explains. The concept goes a long way towards explaining Undead Labs' decision to set the game primarily in a small town environment, and Williams has quite a few interesting anecdotes relating to influential games as well as the challenges inherent in separating the new game from the stack of zombie-themed entertainment products that have swarmed over the popular consciousness in recent years.

Has Undead Labs ever shown anything that resembles an actual game or is it all still smoke and mirrors?

these guys are seriously starting to annoy me...
All you hear from them is how great their game is going to be, how badly every other MMO sucks and then they throw some vague stuff about their game in with some concept art...
It better be the best thing since sliced bread and the second coming of Jesus or they will not get a foot in the door.
Oh wait I forgot... It's a console ONLY MMO.... so noone cares about it anyway

@eLdritchZ -The game might not appeal to you but it has a ton of potential. It has more than enough proven development talent (Jeff Strain, James Phinney) working on it combined with an untapped Xbox 360 MMO market.
If just one percent of Xbox Live users actively play this game it will be larger than EVE Online and RIFT and be the second in the world for a subscriber based MMO. One-half of one percent of Xbox Live users would put it in the top five for subscriber based MMOs.

@HokieKC A zombie MMO would appeal to me.... if it were on the right platform... Do you really think that even 1% of Xbox players cares about an MMO? where do you think that trend to make those 10 hour long B movie experiences comes from?
Also, potential? we don't even know anything about it yet -.- there's no details on features, no gameplay footage, nothing... just some vague blabber about their awesome plans and then a whole lot of big mouth talk about how everyone else sucks...
As I said, until they show something concrete they are absolutely and completely full of it and are not worth a news post on massively imho

The Xbox360 MMO market has remained untapped because Microsoft famously blocks each attempt. Square Enix has said that the only reason Final Fantasy XI made it onto Xbox Live was because the service was in its infancy and Microsoft hadn't made up its mind on policies yet.
If Undead Lab's MMO is exclusive to Xbox Live, expect it to be a lobby-based MMO rather than an open world game.

You can see almost immediately what he means from the guy with the thick hair and beard riding in the back of that rusty-looking 70s era pickup. Very interesting.
