I thik all headgear in all MMO's should be in the shape of jester hats so people wouldn't take themselves so seriously when playing.

It depends. If it's something that fits the overall look of my character, then i'll leave it visible.

Otherwise, i usually have it turned off.

@correllis

Yep, I spend so much time deciding on what hair and color to choose, as well as my characters face that I don't like to cover it up. And most MMOs just delete ones hair when equipping headgear.

As far as I can recall only FFXI and FFXIV have ever taken the time to build helms around each hairstyle where they remain mostly visible, especially the longer styles that hang out around the sides.

Usually, if it doesn't cover my face, I'll use the 'hide helmet' option if the game has one. Exceptions are made for especially jazzy-looking lids.

Wait, hats are uncommon but shoulder pads are normal?

I remember back in '05. I really wanted the Mandalorian helmet in SWG. When I finally got it, I wore it constantly with pride. Then the NGE hit and..

Other games, I usually hide it. Apart from this one helmet I picked up in Rift, kinda reminded me of the bunny in Donnie Darko.

@Kall550

I know exactly what you're talking about in Rift. I only know b/c when I put it on my warrior my wife said I looked like the bunny from Donnie Darko.

well I have quite the different view on hats, since I actually do wear hats in real life as well ;) I consider it a shame that hats have left the fashion roster =( I might turn them off if they are too much of the "leather skullcap" variety but normally I prefer to wear something on my head... I do prefer it though when the game gives me an option for appearance gear, just so that i can find the snazziest large brimmed hat with the biggest plume of feathers ever beheld by man :D

@eLdritchZ I wish top hats made a comeback. Ive always wanted to wear one of those. They dont work too well in cars though. Its a good place to put the emergency cheesy puffs too. Damn, its a beautiful head garnish AND a storage unit. WTF, what more reason do they need? Bring them back, I demind it!

Personally I love hats on my characters, they can make an gear set look completely different, and often they represent an achievement you accomplished in-game. But I intensely dislike poorly designed helmets and headgear that don't account for a say, a characters long flowing hear, or don't actually fit the character's head because they are ill conceived/poorly sized head-replacements (check out Global Agenda) rather than new layers on the graphics.

It's largely about the look for me, as well. If the head gear has stats but looks terrible, I'll choose not to show it if possible. If it suits the character I'll show it, of course, regardless of stats or how terrible or corny it might appear otherwise.

Hats and the like can certainly add to a distinct look as much as detract from it. It really depends on how much customization is available for characters and gear. In other cases it's simply iconic. Would you play a cowboy who doesn't wear a hat?

Well, I often wear hats/helmets in game, partly because I am lazy with the whole character customization and usually have a stock face/hair anyway. eh

But, I do wear hats in real life, usually a fedora if its cold out. I might have to stop though because the ladies go crazy for it when you got the 3 piece suit on and I'm about to get married. Don't wanna get in trouble.

its almost always off, because headgear adds more to a characters personality than any other piece of gear.

More often than not, headgear doesn't express what i would want my dude to, or it just looks entirely goofy or the same as everyone else.

LOTRO has some pretty awesome hats. Indiana jones style, top haps, hats that look like a bra strapped to your head, various cowls, pirate hats with eyepatch... The infamous level 5 fancy sombrero... My personal favorite over the top hat has got to be the Warden level 60 raid set - which is basically a painted ram's skull.

Oh, and to answer the question - it really depends on what I'm doing. My kinnies know I mean business when I show my helmet. It's go time.

Based on the amount of ugly headgear I get, I tend to leave their display off. I made a character I like to look at so it's nice to display the aesthetics I put into his or her customization. I'd tend to leave headgear displayed if it looks good, but that tends to happen at max level in the MMO's I've played. I usually don't spend the time to get those rewards as they involve dungeon grinding.

With a LotRO-like costume system - hats on, deliberately chosen to fit the rest of the costume.

Otherwise - hats permanently off. Don't like most of them anyway, and it's even worse when the hat clashes with the rest of the gear.

Much depends on the character and the headgear.

Most of the time, headgear that hides the face of the character is toggled off, though there are times in which I leave it on (like the Vanilla/BC Tier gear in WoW, or the Primeval Warrior armor in GW). In games with cosmetic gear, I try to find something that fits the character, usually a hat of sorts, and leave it at that.

For me it depends on what class I am playing. Tank class...yeah that helm will be visible. Rogue type...less likely to show my head gear, unless it's a "ninja" style mask/cap.
