I wish some one would make a game like Free Realms could have become.

I love the world, animation, etc.

The attention to detail in the original game was amazing

FreeRealms is neat and I'm thinking about snagging a lifetime sub when money is less tight, but I would be a lot more interested in it if it had the crazy variety of awesome-looking houses and such that Wizard101 has.

Conversely, If Wizard101 had FreeRealms' graphics and a wider variety of things to do, I'd be a lot more impressed with it. I almost feel like a hybrid of Wizard101 and FreeRealms would be my ideal version of this sort of game. Wizard101 has a lot of things that I find appealing but the card-combat gameplay just isn't my thing. =\ And I hate to sound superficial, but while I'm not normally a graphics-whore, the graphics in Wizard are just a shade too dated-looking for my taste.

I beta'd then subscribed to Free Realms but, unlike Beau, I could not get past the drastic changes they made to the game and quit.

For sure, an article like this should be about what the game IS and not what it WAS but this game kinda broke my heart when they changed the free portion of the game.

I think it's important to note that this is a Freemium game. You get a portion of the game for free but to advance beyond a certain level or to get access to premium content you need to subscribe. If I am not mistaken there are NO jobs (classes) you can advance to full level without a subscription. It wasn't always like that. :(

@Pingles Good points, and I touched on them in the video. I have a lifetime sub so haven't thought about that part of it in forever. I would kill to see how many people were lost or came in new when some of the major changes were made!

@Pingles - the Adventurer and TCG jobs can still be leveled up to 20 without having to have a membership. Pet Trainer was free as well, until they got rid of it.

@Beau - did you ever realize you can see all your jobs with their levels simply by clicking the job badge in the top left of the screen (not just the arrows to change jobs)? ;-P

I've been playing since the beta and still pop in almost every day. The combat nerf was a very poor decision, but I expect the SOE people still think it was a great idea, same as the NGE thing in SWG. I'd say about 95% of my friends list quit after that and never came back.

The game changes bosses (or executive producers or whatever title they give them before they quickly move on to another game) every few months it seems and no new real content (quests or new areas) seems to be coming anytime soon, especially after the massive staff cuts recently. Of course they keep churning out cash shop items, and while most of those are well done, like many current and former FR players, I've stopped buying station cash until they actually add something more than a few mini-games and tons of cash shop items. I'll happily support a game with $$$ if they support the players with new content, instead of milking new players with cash shop stuff.

That said, a lifetime sub for only $35 is still a great deal, even better if you manage to buy station cash during a double or triple event. For that price there are tons of things to do and while I originally stumbled into the beta only to check out the game for some friends' kids, I've greatly enjoyed myself and do wish SOE would give this game the support it deserves. The dev team did a great job with the game and the support staff is one of the friendliest and quickest to respond of any game I've played. Definitely worth at least checking out if you just want some fun and can tolerate the nerfed combat. And the player created housing is indeed really impressive!

The intent is there, the intent is to make money. My sister is aggravated by my nieces continued wants in this title to get what her friends have, pets etc, to keep up with the jones'. I simply tell her to say no, but you know weak parents caving to kids that want want want. Of course these companies anticipate this and even laud it.

Like any other misbrand Free Realms isnt free but a sugar coated trap created to make money and the parents pay for it, which is what this company counts on, that and other misguided folks thinking they are getting anything for free.

Constantly seeing articles on free to play titles in which people make statements about buying things is really entertainment in itself and telling of those folks thought process.

You pay for your entertainment, one way or another, no one, including these companies is out to NOT make money.

@Graill440 I'm not sure there is any logic in blaming the company...the same one who can not and does not force any player into buying anything. If you are playing free and you cannot any longer, it is obvious. It's not as though they are placing subliminal messages into the backgrounds of their website or whispering "spend money spend money" backwards in the theme. A parent can blame Free Realms for tempting a child, sure, but I'm not sure anyone is to blame for spending money on the game but the person who knows the three digit code on the back of the card.

Also, I did not claim this title is free-to-play. My signature talks about free, indie or unusual games. I tag it with anything that might have to do with the title or anything that would attract players to the column.

Thanks for the comments so far, guys!

Trying my best to try out Nadirim, but it just won't let me. Keep getting the same loading bug on each time on all major browsers. The stickied thread about it in the forums is just full of the usual squawking(clear your cache*squawk*turn off your firewalls*squawk*), and even caving into trying those things did nothing. All I can assume is that its poorly optimized so my lower end bandwidth just won't cut it.

@Resurge He's talking about the game I am playing this next week. See at the bottom of the article. Each week I tell people what the next game will be.

it was too much of a kids game for me. i beta'ed it and played it a couple of weeks. i liked the mini-games more than combat and racing. racing kind of sucked. i think if you played it from the start, you could lvl all the jobs to 20, except for the 4 that was premium at the time. did they change that?

I haven't logged into Free Realms for ages. I used to be in the habit of going there at the end of the day, winding down before bed. Wonderful environments and lots of fascinating background detail, perfect for just wandering about.

I wish SOE would add the new regions that have been on the edge of the map since beta, but I doubt they ever will now. I imagine that they've seen from the metrics that what they already have is more than is getting used and there'd probably be little commercial benefit in adding new landmass.

I was also somewhat vexed to read in the comments above that Pet Trainer is no longer a job in Free Realms. That was one of my favorites. Is it gone altogether?

On the subject of Nadirim, thanks for doing your usual job of reminding about MMOs I looked at some time ago and always meant to get round to! I had a go at it yesterday and it looks pretty good.

@Bhagpuss - old characters that had pet trainer still have the job, but apparently can't level up in it anymore, at least I can't find a way to do so. Newer accounts and characters don't have the pet trainer job at all. Everyone can still have their pets do tricks.

Like several other features (the vault, new areas, etc.) Pet Trainer was supposed to be revamped, but they ran into problems when they tried to add the trophy system at the same time (also never added and possibly abandoned?) so for now we don't have either.

guess noone pays attention to news sunstone valley will be out in the very near future. You also didn't mention farming or that ranching and perhaps restaurants are coming. you also didn't really mention the house directory that you can use to visit other great player designed properties. free realms is a very fun avenue, if they had gone the same route with the clone wars game we wouldn't need tor at all

@(Unverified) - care to link to an official message from SOE saying they will release Sunstone Valley soon, because the only official comments about new areas from the FR team have been either they aren't working on them at all or that the dev team is slowly working on them when they have free time.

The only official content, other than cash shop stuff, they are actually going to release anytime soon seems to be ranching (which I think might be fairly soon) and the diner content (whatever that might end up being) towards the end of the year, maybe.

You are correct they added a house directory awhile back (which everyone was asking for and the dev team did a great job getting that out for us). The farming was a nice addition, although the prize wheels for it aren't very good, as they are mostly all the same other than split into a few levels of items. And they still haven't fixed the bug of getting hit by anywhere up to 7 farm pests in a row sometimes. The other day while trying to harvest I got: rabbits, crows, fungus, moles/groundhogs, drought, locusts, and then another round of fungus; getting 2 or 3 at the same time. I did manage to combat everything and didn't lose a single crop though, so perhaps the last patch at least made it less of a penalty. Today I got hit by, aphids which is the first I've seen of that pest. :)

@Yarr - heh, that should have been just groundhogs, I'm pretty sure they aren't moles now that I think about it, but I listed them as either as I wasn't sure. All I know is they tunnel around in my crops and unless you leave space on either side of the plot, they can be hard to click on. That is true for any of the animals, don't bunch your plots all together or it can be impossible to click on them when they show up. I learned that when I was doing some fancy designs with the plots and then couldn't get rid of the little critters.
