Raise your hand if you're male, you're over 30, and you have fond memories of building plastic model kits as a kid. Now that we've probably eliminated half the population of this website, those of you remaining (or those of you looking for a gift for a nerdy loved one) may get a kick out of Wargaming.net's latest press release. The strategy gamemaker has partnered up with Revell, one of the oldest model manufacturers in existence, to cross-promote some of the heavy armor featured in World of Tanks.
Many of the game's tanks are already featured in Revell's replica product line, and the company has been offering true-to-life scale model kits of tanks, aircraft, automobiles, ships, and many other kinds of vehicles since the early 1940s. Revell recently dipped a toe into radio-controlled modeling as well, and the company will be demoing an RC tank at the World of Tanks Gamescom booth later this month. In return, Wargaming.net will appear at Revell's booth during the Hobby Spiel exhibition in Leipzig this coming October.

That is one of the most awesome company tie-ins I have ever seen.

I'm under 30 (albeit not by much) but I still have fond memories of making models. That's completely awesome. I'm pretty sure I still have a Revell plane or two somewhere in my parents' house. Definitely the coolest product tie-in I've ever seen for an MMO, F2P or otherwise.

37 here. lol I remember going to my Grandma's in Austin and we would always go to the store and she would buy us a model to build while we were there. I sucked at them, but it was fun.
The name Revell is very familiar!

Why the "over 30" thing? Do they not make plastic tank models and airplanes anymore? I'd have more to say, but I've gotta run back down to my dungeon in Mom's basement and paste those decals onto my Enterprise model!

It's just been my experience that mentioning model kits to folks in their 20s elicits blank stares. It's probably all those dastardly video games the kids are playing nowadays.

Unless you talk to someone who plays the tabletop miniatures games like Warhammer 40k etc.
I remember the F4 Phantom I had on fishing line draped from the ceiling. It was radical.

Yes, the good ol days when models were blown up with firecrackers, or m5's and the associated army men and the tunnels in those great wars..........a more innocent time.

Will they be doing a World of Planes line too? I'm more of a plane person. :P
(And much more of a mecha person.... I only have one plane model right now. F4U Corsair FTW. :3)

I built the 1940 Ford, I built the 1950 Ford after being inspired by the movie Thunder Road, and the '57 Chevy. You could build them stock or souped up. There was Revell, AMT, and Monogram who made model kits. I liked old ships and planes too. I built the Santa Maria, and a Viking ship complete with all the guys and their oars. WW1 airplanes were a favorite, Spads Nieuports, Fokkers. Painted everything. The kits came with decals that you soaked in a bowl of water then slipped them onto the model.

That would be nice if a video game could get people intersted in another hobby. I have not made a plastic model in a long time but maybe world of panes could use a balsa wood company to make their models. now that takes some patience.
My dad and I still like to make the balsa wood planes. I laughed so hard when he asked me what was a good place to get dope from!

Only time I considered building a model tank was when I started playing Company of Heroes, so its nice someone else has the same idea.

Interesting. But unless something has changed recently, Revell products are flash-infested garbage. For quality armor kits, stick with Tamiya. They are more expensive, but they'll save you much grief during construction.

*raises hand*
No tanks, but I built a lot of planes (and a few robots and starfighters).
