Despite the fact that this may be the first time you've ever seen Nintendo mentioned on Massively, it may not be the last. According to an article at Gamespot, the 121-year-old Japanese console company has patented the term "massively single-player" to define a new genre of games that they hope to create.
The basic idea is that you would play a single-player game, and (through an internet connection) what you do in that game would influence the environment or economy of the same game on someone else's console. Nintendo gives several examples of how this would work, including the construction of housing in a neighborhood, oil supply and demand, and even gossip, without those pesky "other players" messing up your game. The patent mentions the fact that people who share the same friends list may be able to see each other (much like Fable III does), but other than that, it's not so much the other players you see, but only their effects on the game's world.
Does this sound like something you'd be interested in checking out, as an MMO fan? Let us know in the comments below.

I'm actually ok with Animal Crossing. I mean, if there was a reason besides Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Metroid to own a Nintendo console, i would be excited. But as is, i think i'll stay away from the wall at the game section that is all mini games.

@Syesta I wasn't that excited about this till you said "Pokemon". Other worlds like LoZ and Mario just seem to static and based on one character for this to work. Pokemon, on the other hand, was almost made for this exact idea. Hearing gossip and stories about other trainers would be a nice touch to the world without feeling forced.

This isn't all that bad in some ways, tbh. If you look at, say, animalcrossingcommunity.com, you'll see they have groups that have been together for years, similar to how guilds/clans in other games work, with the two newest games (and up coming 3rd) with their actual online play have added a good amount of social options.
My only problem with this is that it's often hard to find other players. Without some sort of lobby in the game itself, it may make it hard to meet new people without having to use a 3rd party site (like ACC).

Reminded me more of Spore. Spore would actually pull other user's monsters and worlds to populate your own. So not really unique. But still, a cool concept nevertheless.

That does sound oddly intriguing, as a basic concept. I'm interested in seeing what they do with it at least.

This sounds almost like a MMO except without the social aspects or fun.

Think I would have to see a specific instance to form a solid opinion, but it still sounds like those "pesky players" would be messing up your game. You just wouldn't be able to see them doing so. Based on this article, I'd have to say no thanks. Interesting concept but I'm skeptical on how well it'd work or if it'd even make a difference.

Ubisoft did this with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in the Rome market for PC. I could get behind this concept.

This sounds a little like DUST 514.
If the patent gets approved, CCP could be sued by Nintendo in the near future.

Sorry good sir, but that is not how patents work. Getting a patent for something someone else has provably done before you doesn't give you any right to issue a cease and desist or similar to the person who decided not to patent that particular item.

I'd potentially be interested in this, yes. I often play MMOs solo, and I think a lot of other people do the same.
It would all depend on whether or not the actual game itslef was a fun solo experience, of course.

Yes and No.
DUST is not out yet, knowing CCP it would not be out for a while.
A patent could have enough legal weight in case of a legal action to stop DUST from happening altogether. However, since both Nintendo and CCP are ind different countries, enforcing such legal action would be very, very difficult.

Can't understand why we don't have a FreeRealms-ish Pokemon World MMO. Nintendo could have done this years ago. Can't understand why they are leaving that money on the table, i know plenty of people who would go crazy over that.
A big 3d world with pokemon to capture and battles and adventures to have, in an EQ type presentation.
Their own cartoons show 3d renders of some of the characters so it's not as though the 2D cartoons couldn't translate well.

We do actually, Coliseum, then there was that Hey You Pikachu game... and the photography game for the N64... then the Gamecube had a game where you could find "Dark" pokemon, and you had to purify them before you could safely use them... and yeah...
